Since the klez appeared i stopped using mail clients. I forwarded all my pop accounts to my hotmail address and now and i only check it online.

Hotmail doesnt seem to download any viruses. Well, i havent gotten any sent to me since i stopped using outlook express anyhow so my current method seems to be working out.

Hotmail offers a few tools for filtering spam. By keyword and by email address. This gets rid of 95% of the junk mail but i still get the 5% which translates to 10 per day. At one point i wasnt getting any spam but recently it started back up.

Blocking senders would work fine if the spammers used there real email addresses. I block them anyway and even the entire domain sometimes.

Is it possible to block spam by IP? At this point i wish i could block any server from apnic because thats where all of it comes from. If europe cant buckle down on spammers id just as soon cut them off.

So is it possible to block ip's or entire blocks from reaching my inbox ?

Thanks

Also.. does anyone know if i can block senders in hotmail like this *@*.be To block any email from a specific domain extension?

Hotmail accepts it but im not sure if it works. I could eliminate entire domain extensions if it works.

Most of my spam has a .ru extension. I know its probably fake but blocking all mail from .ru would stop the spam.

It is vey hard to block all spam. You can block known spam with any decent server, however it is almost imposible to block the stuff that comes in under an alias such as *******@hotmail or yahoo.com . Nothing against either of these, but when the spam man sends out with a valid looking address, it is just that....valid looking. I might suggest that you get adaware at Lavasoft.com and keep your anti virus up to date and as much as you do not have time, run your vscan

I dont use adaware but im very aware of spyware & the like. Ive never been infected with anything and my antivirus is on 24/7 and always updated.

I know i will always have to deal with the hotmails and the yahoos because so many of us use the service it wouldnt make sense to block the domain.

I have had success dealing with hotmail/yahoo spoofed spam by blocking keywords like "teen" "porn" "free" "FW:" "Debt" etc.

The problems im facing now is when people use sender addresses like :

POIUH0986096@freetriplex.m0a3.124.net

I guess i already know the answer to my own question.. Its not possible. If it were it would be common knowledge.

I too directed my emails to hot mail, its easier, simple and I have done this for 2 years and it will not let a virus in, if you get a attachment and there is nothing in there I have always flet that it may have been infected but don't really know, but I personally feel it is more than safe sort of a double check and I too block all that spam but after about 6 months of clicking to block a email address it gets full and you have to delete some and start all over, but its fast and easy to do and I feel safer doing it this way (do these people that send all that spam really think that we are stupid enough to read all that junk) I don't even look if I don't recognise the name or company I just check and delete all at once.

Don't use hotmail but, as to your question on Domains. I block them at my different servers by using for e.g. *.de *.ru *.jp *.dk *.kr *.nl *.tw ect...in the from. Choose what you'd like:)

Also, in subject *?big5?*, *[big5]* Another thing is if in the To or Cc there isn't macaction@hotmail.com block that also :-)
Just ideas and opinions.
Good Luck

I know this doesn't do anythng for spam, but at least with Eudora set to skip messages over 40Kb in size most of the virii get stopped at the server. I can always go back and retrieve a large file if I know the sender. Like SMOUD, I keep the antivirus on and up to date, and so far, haven't caught anything:)

I went into Options at Hotmail & set it to block any address that is not in my address book & that worked for me to stop the spam.

DW, i wish i could do that but i get alot of valid email from people i dont know.

And i have blocked emails from myself :). That knocked the spam way down since most of it was sent to like 25 similar addresses at a time.

Hotmails web based tools wont let me block domain extensions like *.ru . I have to follow the *@*.ru rule. After i posted this i blocked 24 domain extensions and i still got my 10 spams today.

And for anyone who thinks people arent dumb enough to open/click thru spam they are wrong. My uncle informed me that he likes it when compuserves partners spam him with deals on peripherals. When i showed him the same printer he just bought for $50.00 less by using pricegrabber his jaw dropped. He has SBC [local phone provider] dsl and still pays compuserve 21.95 a month because he likes the browser and its popup ads when he launches it.

I have been following this board for a few days now. This topic really caught my eye.

Spam is a REAL hard issue because once your email address becomes public and is added to a list broker it is sold and resold.

Example: You log on a site; They want to give you some GREAT free service... but, it will cost you .. what? -Your email address- and permission to send you email. This is called opt in. Once you give them your email address it is only a matter of hours before it is sold to some spammer along with the permission to use it.

You may feel that this is ok, but once you get on one of these lists you will be FOREVER clicking on remove or adding a different filter for each person or company that the list is sold too.

It would be nice if you had a different email address for everyone that asked you for one. This way you could simply stop checking for email at that one account!

We have been working on a solution for this problem for a long time and feel that we may have come up with a good solution.

As a demo user you will be able to do everything but save email locally on our system. We welcome anyone reading this message to freely use the service and report back any problems or ideas.

This is how it works:

Sign up for an account. The user name that you choose will be part of a virtual domain.

We have two virtual domains added to the system right now. X-Email.com and Spam-stopper.net As more domains are added they will work automatically with your accounts.

Example: user name "hiya" would make your email domain @hiya.x-email.com It will also work as @hiya.spam-stopper.net.

You can give out as many email addresses as you like without ever needing to configure anything special. If your mother asks you for your email address give her mother@hiya.x-email.com. If your school asks for your email address you may want to give them doverhigh@hiya.x-email.com

Any email sent to ANY email address at your domain will automatically be sent to your REAL email address WITHOUT anyone ever finding out what it is. If the Doverhigh email address starts to get spam, you will know that they sold your email address to spammers. If the mother email address starts to get spam you will need to make a phone call :-)

Any time that you get spam at one of the email addresses that you gave out simply connect to our page and turn it off. Problem solved.

For the service to work properly, you may need to start with a new email address that is spam free. No one will ever get the real address and it should stay free from spam.

If other problems arise, we include filter options. You can also use the filter options to block the To: address if you want to include an auto respond such as: Don't spam me here. I can't hear you any more .. Go away: Even though you will never see the spam, they will get your auto respond after each spam. Maybe something more like "Go buy a new list, yours does not work any more."

You can signup for this service free at http://spam-stopper.net/signup.html

The page is not done yet, we have been working hard on it for a while. Please feel free to betatest the service and report any problems that you may have. We are adding worm filtering now which will need to be tweaked a bit more. Those that report problems and submit ideas will have a lifetime free membership with all of the bells and whistles.

Let me know how you like it and feel free to ask questions here.

I use spamcop which is a free service if all you want to do is report the spam to the network where it originated from, which is almost always not the one showing in the header.

You can sign up for a free spamcop account to forward your spam to. Their software actually traces it to where it originated from. Spamcop then generates reports to all the networks and domains used in that spam. You just click on "send reports' and it does the rest.

It gives me some satisfaction to think I am doing something which might help slow the spammers down. I don't think it stops them if they are really determined, they just go out and get new accounts.

Spamcop.net also has a paid service where you can get email filtering from them. I haven't really checked it out.

Here is an example of a report it generated from a spam I sent:

http://spamcop.net/sc?id=z47070471z2c861625c417c7ff5e192199424ef332z

That URL should work.

There is another organizaton called spamhaus.org which tracks ISP's and netblocks which knowingly allow spammers to use their bandwidth. They have some pretty amazing stuff at their site, including ;lists of companies and individuals who make software for spammers to use for spoofing their email and IP addresses and other things.

Ive signed up for spamcops free service and ive begun reporting every single peice of spam.

Ive also begun blocking all individiual domains mentioned or linked to in the email message.

Ive begun writing the abuse address at every domain mentioned in the email address including the one in the from line. I know the email address is usually false but maybe yahoo might get involved somehow.. either way its only one more email for me to write and it makes me feel better.

And paris.. lockdown corp sounds like a plan but google didnt turn up a single hit about the site and the page your linking to looks like a template. Im afraid id be signing my self up for more spam. Maybe when your site gets a foot hold i might jump on board.

Thank you for the reply. I was really interested in the idea but was afraid to jump in. Now i realize i wasnt searching with the right keywords.

LockDown Corp is a well established entity. I apoligize for the mistake.

Ive come to realize i cant do anything about tracking the spammers so ive decided to go after the products being offered.

Spam List is a new project of mine where i list every product im spammed with's home page. Im working on how to present it.. so far ive just been commenting on my experiences while "clicking thru" the spam.

Ive been lucky with my site so far and google has been ranking my pages pretty well so hopefully this turns up when people search for specific products to buy.

Ive removed all my filters and cleared my block senders list. Im going to sacrifice my 6 year old hotmail account to give companies that pay spammers a bad name.

Oh - not so sure that was a good move SMUOD.. I had to abandon my ISP because I began using SpamCop.

Shortly after reporting to them, I received 10,000 returned e-mails... None were actually sent by me - but, all contained my email address.

Ellis,
funny you mention that.. I thought maybe it was a spammer trick to get me to respond. I used spamcop reporting for 3 days and now i get tons of returned spam.. it appears that ive sent tons of spam that was undeliverable from servers allover the place.

Luckily... i used my hotmail account. I just blocked mail from all the servers by domain address.. The only one thats still showing gup is postmaster@ hotmail. Hotmail wont allow me to block them :). I filtered that by adding postmaster to the keyword list.

I dont use spamcop anymore. Instead i add to the offenders list ! :)
