Can anybody tell me how to stop AVG from loading up in the start menu (lower right bottom corner) when I boot up the computer. I looked in all of the options but couldn't find anything.

Yes that works but I thought there might be a way to do it from within the actual software.

I don't think there is any inbuilt provision for preventing it appearing in the system tray. Probably because it is used to signify problems (greying out) and email transfers, so they feel you ought to have it there.

If AVG is on the System Tray then it is Running in the background. It scans every .exe as and when Opened. It also Scans every incoming e-mail unless you have Disabled that feature. You could stop it appearing on the Sysyem Tray by Unchecking the avgcc.exe entry in MsConfig but that would defeat the whole purpose of having AVG in the first place

Yep, don't untick anything in msconfig unless you are totally sure that AVG remains working afterwards. I don't think it can be done easily because of the major function outlined in Lesley's post and the other stuff I mentioned.
There might be some clever way of losing just the icon, in the registry or whatever, but I think this would be best avoided as there is no properly provided/intended facility.
Scanning emails is pointless but that's another story.
