Kit, it is quite common to have some fragmented files. As long as your computer is working satisfactory do not worry. When you consider that every program you add/delete to good old windows, is some kind of compromise. It just a fact of using a computer as it normally happens. As long as you are using scandisk and defragmentation as routine maintenance items to maintain your system, it should be just fine for quite a while. If you are into downloading/testing/uninstalling different software programs then the time frame of having your computer run error free is reduced. This is how programs like Clean Sweep come into being, and they are another compromise too. All the best!

I may be wrong here, but....... Isn't defragmenting the HD just deleting the empty spaces between the bits of stored data, effectively squeezing the data to the start of the drive ? So fragmented files would not be fixed by defragmenting. I installed Nortons Systemworks 2002 pro a few days ago. Running this, it found 209 fragmented files which it fixed. Now when I surf, Windows is stable, where as before, after half an hour it slowed, and crashed. The mouse clicks echoed and I had to reboot to get things back working again.
thanks for the info guys. i do experiment in downloading different files i can't help it. curiosity you know. well my concept of defragmenting is assembling the pieces of files and putting them together. they become fragmented due to constant use of the file. anyways, i'll try both. thx again
