Spyware/intrusive popups

Specs: Windows XP

if anyone can help me, I have been suffering from popups (which open themselves in new tabs) advertising "breaking news" and all kinds of random things. I ran a HijackThis scan and would be willing to post the resultant log. Thanks in advance for the help.

try running a full scan with malwarebytes, decline the trial offer on first startup of the program, update it, remove selected when finished...restart if necessary.
It's a pretty decent malware remover and is free. Not a bad place to start.

Yeah, I tried malwarebytes, and even though it found and eradicated some "objects," the problem persists. I'm finding more and more that these sorts of issues rarely have easy fixes...very frustrating. Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I tried this, but unfortunately, I'm getting a damned "connection reset" message after I click on "analyze." It's almost as if the "virus" knows I'm trying to eradicate it and blocks the page from loading. Any idea of the best way to allow this site to load normally (note: this happened yesterday on "bleepingcomputer.com" when I tried to post something there)? Thanks.
