Comment:

I'd appreciate any help. Recently, I've been unable to run my spyware program through AVG. The program opens, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for a minute, then closes down. I can't get a complete scan. I ran a log in safe mode using HiJack This, and I need help figuring out what to get rid of. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks!
Gordon

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Download Killbox to your desktop from this link Killbox by Option^Explicit. If you already have "Killbox" update to this newer version. We will need it later in safe mode

Please download SmitFraudFix from this link http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Smitfra... Then extract the contents to your desktop.
!!!! Only run option #1 as runing the other options on an uninfected computer will damage the desktop.!!!!
Open the "SmitfraudFix" folder and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the "SmitfraudFix" folder again and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing " Y " and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if "wininet.dll " is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing "Y" and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from this link:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe

Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running, it may cause your system to hang.)

Please post the combofix.txt log.

Post a new Hijack This log please.

Thanks for all the help with this (I did notice that I can only access this site through IE. I had switched to Firefox, it seems when I access sites about spyware, including this one, it shuts down). Also, after running SmitfraudFix in safe mode, when I rebooted in normal mode my desktop background had changed to a solid blue color, and the Microsoft Word icons looked different. To do the last step with the new HiJack This log, I had to go back into safe mode. It kept closing itself everytime I tried in regular mode.

First, here's the SmitfraudFix log:

Go to File on the top bar and choose" Save As", Change the "Save As Type" to All Files, Name it Fix.reg then save it to your desktop.

Double click Fix.reg (or right click and choose Merge) and it will ask if you want to merge the contents into the registry, choose Yes.

Please download Dr Web CureIt to your desktop from this link ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan.
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives.
A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable.
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log on your desktop, psot a new combofix log and a new Hijack this log please.

Here's the latest..I removed Spyware Terminator first as instructed, so when I went to check and remove from HiJack This, the only one that wasn't there from your list was the third one down, the C drive program file for Spyware Terminator. I figured that I had already deleted it so that wasn't a problem. I also didn't have any next icons next to anything that Dr. WebCureIt found. It either said it was a trojan item and deleted it, or moved a few other items on its own. I never saw an option to do anything else. Here are the logs:

Looks clean to me.

Download the latest version of http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the "Download" button to the right.

Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.

Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the "coffee cup" icon next to it.

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed

. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

You should consider adding "Spywareblaster" to your arsenol of antispyware tools, just do a google search for spywareblaster, download it,install it, and update it. Its free and runs in the background, so you don't actually run it, and re-writes malicious script before it can install on your computer. Look for updates weekly as there is no auto-update on the free version.

Thanks for all the help with this. It's greatly appreciated. Firefox no longer shuts down when entering this site. Since all this started when I tried to run an AVG scan and it kept closing, should I reinstall it first or is it safe to run one now? Thanks again.

Try to run it and if it shuts down, reinstall it. Remember to update it.
