Hi,

I had to revert to using an old PC recently, not worth buying security programs for and health of it too iffy to risk upgrading to Win 98. When I had a newer computer I used to run both Spybot & Adaware, and could see that each missed things the other one got. But with Win 95, only Spybot can be used. I'd like to download a second reputable free program, because I know a lot of things are not getting caught by Spybot alone. Which other compatible, free ones are the best (and catch different things than Spybot does)?

I would also like to know of some good online spyware scan sites that can work with Win 95. I used to use pestscan.com, but can't with this O/S. I liked that site better than most others because many of them would routinely find nothing on me, whereas pestscan would. Trendmicro's Housecall works with 95, but I think that's more for viruses than spyware, or maybe it checks for trojans too. If not, a good trojan scan site I can use with Win 95 would be appreciated too.

Thanks! I don't understand how the average (novice) person can keep a Win 95 machine reasonably secure these days, especially since Microsoft stopped issuing updates for it years ago. But that's another subject, never mind!

You might try

http://www.oldversion.com/

I know they have previous versions of Adaware. I am not sure about the updates for the old Adaware programs. It is hard to find a firewall anymore that 95 will supported for. HTH

Previous versions of Ad-aware would not be updated - that's not important though, see: Ad-Aware SE works on Win95 too - it's only the installer that doesn't work in 95.

Older versions of ZA will work in 95 - also at oldversion.com

You might check out Lightspeed's Win95 Security page

.. and how much longer do you believe M$ support for 98 will last (such as it is)?

Simplest thing you can do is move away from IE & OE.

Yes, i agree with Jboy, who knows how much longer Ad-Aware 6.0.181 will continue working with the new updates! I will certainly look into that (soon!) and make sure to explain Win 95 users visiting my page how to install and run the newer SE version in the easiest way possible. For now, except for being slower, the older version appears to do as good a job (since it uses the same deff file).

As for support for Windows 98, well it has been extended until june 30th, 2006 as this link can attest:

Win 98 support extended.

This should mean any new software until then will still work on it, hopefully!

Hi all

Yes, I imagine sooner or later Ad-aware v6 support will fall by the wayside as well, but I was referrring to the v5.83 on oldversion - which I believe is pretty much defunct (although it may be somewhat useful).

M$ support really isn't all that essential as long as there are dedicated sites such as yours. 98 will eventually be dropped - so what? Determined folks can keep the older Systems running with a bit of research - but there will come a point when not everything can be kept 'current' (it seems to be an 'XP world' anymore).

btw - your site seems to have grown over the years, quite a find for anyone struggling to maintain 95 (or earlier) - nice work

Thanks so much everyone, as usual, Computing.net saves the day! I would never ever know about resources like the ones you mention otherwise. :^ ) Do good online spyware scanners exist for Win 95 too?

Now, if only this site could notify you by email when you have a new reply! Why is it that many boards dedicated to something like bonzai gardening or cosmetic surgery will routinely offer that, but not a board dedicated to technology and computers? But, I'm grateful it exists period, so ignore the whining! ;^ )
