Browsing internet and Norton AV informed me of trojan horse. Resulted in home page changing to About:Blank and having constant error messages in big white box usually headed Explorer and saying "An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click Ignore...Ignore or Close". If I click Close then the following message appears: Explorer (or the heading) caused problem in GDI.exe. This then causes the blue screen. If I repetitively press ignore (sometimes for up to 5 mins) then it progresses on to what I am trying to do. This happens constantly from the minute windows begins to open up to whenever I try to do anythign on my PC.

I've run Adaware which found quite a bit of stuff including CWS stuff which wasn't there earlier in the day. Norton AV finds nothing and nor does Stinger.

I have tried to download Spybot but keeps crashing because of my problem.

ANy tips would be most welcome and please consider I have a lot of trouble getting onto websites (currently at work PC) and don't seem to be able to save any downloads, only open at source.

Thanks.

Since you have ME, you might have to turn system restore off. Try starting your computer and during the boot sequence enter the safe mode, and run Adaware. Two excellent antispyware sites, that I like to send people to, have been attacked by the bad guys and cannot be accessed right now(Merijin and spywareinfo). Try this one for more tips and ideas to resolve your problem http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=227

Thanks for your advice capt. Tried your suggestion but there's nothing found on Adaware.

Am aware of the sites you mentioned and have a few similar posts around but no resolution as yet. Any other tips?

It's been suggested elsewhere to run a System Restore. I have and my system seems to be running pefectly. Am I missing something here and is the underlying cause still on my system? It seems quite a simple solution.

System restore is often where the bad stuff hides. The files in system restore are "protected" and antivirus/spyware/malware programs can only detect, but cannot clean/delete/repair those files due to that. When shut down the computer after normal use and later turn it on these protected files reinfect the system. Sometimes I feel like a broken record by always recommending turning it off and restarting, but it can really do the trick.

System restore usually works when one downloads a program that causes a problem. Kazaa is my favorite example, as it contains all kinds of spyware. Uninstalling it running Adaware/Spybot and doing a system rtestore to a point before the Kazaa installation takes care of all the bad stuff.
