Just finished checking out my daily internet information sites that historically installed at least three spyware components into my system. I always run Ad-aware to detect and remove these components. I installed Spy Blaster and expected to find no components.
I have to report that the spyware components were there as always! It is still necessary to use Ad-aware and/or SpyBot. To assist Lavasoft I suggest that everyone consider upgrading to Ad-aware plus to support them for the great service that they have provided us. Take care and all the best!

I'm keeping and running both Adaware and Spybot,as they will detect and remove spyware that's bundled with software,whereas that's not SpywareBlaster's function.At least that's not how I read it,capt.
Did you check out the links I gave in this earlier thread...
http://computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/2939.html
One of those links will take you to a forum/thread started by the program's developer,and I'm sure he'd like to hear your input.His username there is "Javacool"

Will do! I have received some great information from you in the past, and I always appreciate the good work you and information you provide. This is a brand new product, and I am sure updates will be coming out. I just did not want anyone to stop using Spybot and/or Ad-aware, or a new computer user relying on Spyware Buster as their only spyware defense. Take care and thanks again!

Hi, I don't mean to sound offensive or anything .. since its nice that you found this product, Kid. But, why install SpywareBlaster on a pc ???
This blocks JUST activeX on webpages from IE ... now:
1) thats very rare for scripts to be actively loading and entering spyware into your registry. What are the odds??? I cannot remember having ONE single incident like that and I have been online for a long time.2)If you clean your PC (ad-aware spybot etc ..) , secure it with a firewall , Virus scanner and trojan scanner as well as selecting a higher security setting in IE other than the default . Would SpywareBlaster be necessary ... I think its a big NO ... it doesn't clean spyware other than those that are trying to actively install into the registry from webpages. Now why not get Script Defender(http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm)... thats stops you from a bigger problem ... email scripts and webpage activeX that can format your PC for free ... As much as people hate spyware ( who doesn't)... you only need Ad-aware and Spybot for your PC .. Spyware blaster is a useless addon ... clean your PC and keep it secure and you WILL NOT have other spyware instaling itself. The biggest threat is through installing thrash like KaZaA and Imesh and other P2P stuff that come loaded with junk. I do not think that spyware infection thru webpages account for 1/2% of infections. And its not like the activeX script pops up every 3 minutes. If anyone could show me a site that pops up activeX to install spyware I would love to see the link because I never had such an incident.
I just think simply that even though the internet is a very dirty place :) spyware, hackers, viruses etc. there is too big a hype you do not need to be loading your PC with 5-10 programmes to secure it ... just look at what you are installing and think DO I REALLY NEED THIS!!! Remember Windows and those nice blue screens before you install stuff.
have a nice day :)

Ok guys i have a couple questions.. In your opinion..
1. What security related software should a person being running while on the internet.
A. Antivirus - Updated Definitions.
B. FirewallWhat else?
_____________________________________________2. What security scan utilities should a person be using to make sure no spyware was installed?
A. Ad-Aware
What else?
_____________________________________________Can you think of anything else [security related] that people should have running in real time? Anything they should have installed for scanning [offline stuff like adaware or antivirus etc]?
_____________________________________________Thanks.

Shut me up or down.Here's my answer tp your questions.1.Definitely A&B.I don't think having a firewall can be over-rated or recommended enough.It's vitally important for safe surfing as well as updating your av program. IMO.2.I use Spybot search and destroy 1.1.I absolutely love and recommend it!What else?An anti-trojan program!I use and recommend Trojan Hunter.For browser security I run Javacool's Browser Hijack Blaster(runs in the tool bar).I don't know if it falls under the security category but I would recommend a temp. internet files /cookies cleaner that erases the index.dat.file at startup.At the least this will help pc performance.Another cool little program is Win Patrol 4.0.I like that because it covers a lot of areas,monitors for worms,virus,startup program control,cookie control.It's free,easy to use and well-supported by the developer.That's some of my programs/recommendations.I do admit to over-kill security wise.LOL.Regards.JB

Hylian,I put your response to task directly with the programs developer...these are his responses;
This blocks JUST activeX on webpages from IE ... now:
1) thats very rare for scripts to be actively loading and entering spyware into your registry. What are the odds???----------------------
Actually, that is not what it does. Yes, it blocks spyware Active X controls from being installed or even run in IE - it ALSO blocks those Active X controls from being run AT ALL on your computer. (See other posts in this thread for details - this is not a "run-in-the-background" solution).
"Scripts" are not loading and entering spyware into your registry. Active X controls are not doing this either (although they use some registry keys to make themselves run at bootup, etc.). Active X controls may install files, or do almost anything any other executable file can do (example: the recent e-mail greeting card malware installs itself via an Active X control - if you run SpywareBlaster, check all items and kill them, then you should not have to worry about this malware ever trying to download that Active X control to install itself).

----------------------See above (Xupiter has also recently been very widespread).

----------------------The media has been highlighting the recent outbreak of the e-mail greeting card malware (which, as I said before, installs via an Active X control) and Xupiter has also been reported in many places.

----------------------While I also agree that loading your PC with too many programs is not a good idea, SpywareBlaster does not run in the background, and takes up no resources EXCEPT for when you run it. It sets kill bit settings in the registry, which again do not take up any resources - they are even used by Microsoft to block and prevent against known Active X vulnerabilities.
As SpywareBlaster simply sets registry values, and does not run in the background, it will not cause BSODs like resident applications can.

*Now we both understand how the program works and what it does just a lil' better.

Hey all,
SMOUD,
I have suggested using several programs that I have posted numerous times in different threads on this board.
I don't want to post all again,
Jim Beau has a very good list of programs that he uses, and they work.
Just one that I would like to add to the list.. and that would be Finjan's Surfin Guard Pro.
The programs that I use, are Zonealarm Pro, Finjan Surfin Giard Pro, Norton Antivirus.
I have at my disposal, AVG Antivirus, Lavasoft AD-Aware, Spybot S&D, Swat-it.
I have never had any major incident or any of the new viruses using these program.
Hope this helps you
Regards,
Tank863

Surfin Guard Pro won't run on XP ,though.It says it does on the homepage,but then doesn't list XP on another page.I downloaded it a while back,going on the homepage info.It seemed like it installed,but it would not run.Just popped up for a split second...then gone.Tried downloading/installing again,same results.
So I got rid of it once and for all.

Another very good surfing tool is Spyblocker.It's a filter/anonymous browser program.It's not free,but is inexpensive($19 something for a lifetime license).For an internet history cleaner that cleans the index.dat file I found that Supercleaner from www.southbaypc.com works well and supports Opera.It's a pay program also($29.95 lifetime).I've tried a lot of different types of programs and the xp-compatability issue rears it's ugly head from time to time.That bites!Regards.JB

Excellent Kid ... i thought from your post that SpywareBlaster loaded into memory. Well as you said it loads registry keys that stops CLSID entries ... well i have that programme now :) trying it .. i'm a software freak I beta test software and I always like to see new programmes people develop and how they work. But then again there is a little problem. Some programmes like TEKNUM if you know about it I had a previous post about how to remove the startup entry that kept coming back again and again. I searched the entire registry for the key .. there was none. Turns out that the ebtries were loaded from a DLL into registry. You have to remove that file to stop the startup entries ... now SpywareBlaster can't stop this ... but then again nothing found the DLL I manually when through the SYSTEM folder and checked each and every DLL till i got the Teknum crap out. Anyway I have SpywareBlaster running now... nice little programme :) thanks for the post about it.
Now the other thing is the post by ShutMeUpOrDown about what to run on the net. Now this is what i did and it works for me very well because I DO NOT get spyware, or trojans or viruses etc ...
1) Run a realtime virus scanner ONE only not two.
2) Have a firewall Kerio is good because the Application MD5 setting lets me know every single programme that tries to connect out of my PC believe me you would be amazed at what tried to connect to the net even though you have No Filter Rules for them. The purpose of this is to simply inform you if spyware is on your PC trying to get out it will show up in MD5 tab.
But you should NOT have any spyware to begin with You should get Spybot and scan your PC every week ... you don't need a spyware realtime scanner once you clean your PC it will stay that way unless you screw up with your security.
3) You need Script Defender or something like it to stop scripts messing your PC up. And believe me spyware is nothing compared to the frequency and type of damage malicious scripts can do to your PC
4) You need to set your Outlook (if you use this for mail) to use the Restricted Site settings(on HIGH)in IE .. you also need to run IE with ALL settings at Medium or Higher ... if this is too much work for you them don't use IE it has more bugs than anything else, you will ALWAYS be at risk 80% of the net use IE ... its a big target for exploits and will always be ... bill gates doesn't seem to realise this.
You could use Opera its the safest browser avaliable.
4) You need a trojan scanner like Tauscan ... realtime .. I only turn it on when in chat, when the risk is high. People who use P2P should consider the trojan scanner .. but its useless then because the person you are connected to has access to your entire hard drive when using programmes like Kazaa. So what you should look at is a tool to hide the Hard Drive or critical folders at least.This is the basic stuff I run Script Defender, NOD32, Kerio, Tauscan. Naviscope (which hides system info from sites thta grab it , very useful)and script defender. I don't use IE .. stopped that a while back , I have MyIE its a tabbed version of IE and gives you more control over the browser. That works for me all patches and updated definitions for everything. I don't scan mail with NOD32 anyway I use AVG for that :) love the little message at the bottom ( hardly use Outlook anyway).
Thats it I don't get net trash on PC with my setup no probs no BSOD ... i removed IE integration with desktop anyway (IEradicator) .. if you have a lot of BSOD's try removing the IE integration stops all the probs.
Anyway my point is get a couple good progs and run them :) look at what you install (i spent about 4 months thinking of what Firewall to get .. i tried 8 before I decided Kerio was what "I" wanted ).. and use them properly .. most virus scanners save you from scripts on webpages anyway.
Anyway this is a long post might as well stop .. but one last thing I run a full system scan (Spybot and NOD32) everyday before I shutdown this helps a lot to know the PC is clean.
bye ... happy halloween all :)

Damn it another post .. i always forget to add something. Ok ummm Surfin Guard pro is another thing I would stay away from that and Lockdown Millennium .. both suck up resources and Surfin Guard pro has A LOT of issues with IE, and other security software on the PC .. installing on XP knowing incompatability flaws could make your life hell. See if it works with other people first Kid.
hope it helps

Somehow I had a spyware attack, firewall blocks active x .
Also running Surfinguard pro. (real time)I may have had one or both enabled, after windows update.
Ad cookies spreading adware, don't know?
Had almost every entry in SpywareBlaster
removed before I downloaded and ran it.SpywareBlaster is a tool, easy way to opt out.
This Tracking cookie or tracking site
found by SpyBot is aggressive.Avenue A, Inc
(aka) atdmtSay NO to spyware any way you can.

Thanks for all the responses. The reason i asked is because i know you guys have posted tons of links here for security related products. I also know that the "best" changes from time to time.
I was hoping a single thread like this with all the products would be a good place for people who are looking for ideas about what to do/use.

NAV 2002(NSW,actually),AVG(not running together),Sygate,Ad-subtract Pro,Trojan Hunter,SpyBot,Adaware,Script Sentry,and a couple startup monitors...maybe a couple more,but that's it here,off the top of my head.
Here's a couple non-security related you might want to look at;
This one's better than belarc,and free;
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
And this tweaker,used to be called WinBack Scratcher ...free,been revamped;

I like how this thread evolved into a discussion about a variety of security-related programs.This is Cool!!A lot of the people that posted in this thread have done a heck of a job helping others with problems.Someone mentioned how this thread could be helpful for pc users looking for a program to help secure them on the net.I always take note of programs mentioned by some of you.I really like to test programs,verify if they work or are compatable.*A tip for Spybot users:the developer has a registry monitor program in beta.I have it and it works.It's not fully functional yet.It really looks promising though.And the thing I really like about it is it's been very stable for me so far.Keep up the great work!JB
