My wallpaper was hijacked by SpySheriff. I tried most of the solutions listed here and in other forums and still could not set wallpaper from display properties desktop tab.
What finally worked for me was running Spybot Search & Destroy (v 1.4) which found and removed many pieces which were still left behind after a combination of AdAware Personal SE (Build 106r1), SpySweeper (Version 4.0.3, Build 360), and Spyware Doctor (3.2.0.340 but trial version and used manual removal of offending files/registry keys).
I guess the bottom line is that things are getting worse, not better, as far as needing multiple Spyware/Adware Tools to get the job done.
IMHO, using multiple tools seems a lot easier than mucking around with Hijack This and needing to get (sometimes a lot) of assistance from other folks. Save that route for the cases in which you are really stumped!
Thanks to all those who do asssist us when we need it!!

Support Bounties for Malware Writers!

It's highly recommended to use more than one antispyware/malware app (and has been for years now) - there is no blanket solution, although if users had a greater awareness of their machines and the 'normal' running processes, they would more easily recognize & repair problems.
Some of these pests are so convoluted that a multipart solution is required, often including specific tools or registry 'fixes'
HJT! is great, but just another tool, and the user needs to have a clue before going that route
If you get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers
