i know there is definatley one if not 2 spybot updates i cannot recieve (i have 15090 definitions when scanning not 16000+ which i think it should be) when i go to update it says no newer updates found. i have tried different servers but none of them work. any ideas why i cant get up to date anyone?

Raises an interesting point - number of reference files scanned for!
On Win2000 Pro Spybot checks for 15501 references (on my system) and I have the latest update.
When I ran Win98SE (until a few weeks ago)Spybot included 17000 or so references.
Any comments, anyone??

same for me ray i have just reformatted hard disk and with previous installation i had well over 16000. now ive reinstalled 1.3m i can only get 15090 and it wont update anymore

That is strange, as I have 15,501.
I am using the new version 1.3 also. And I am using Windows XP Home; if that matters.
I did not choose to install the "tea-timer" stuff yet, as I'm not certain what the heck it is. Take care everyone.

Hi Tommyo and Gary!
I have not "loaded" the tea-timer, either - like you, I don't know what it is:it sure doesn't boil the kettle!!!
But Tommyo and I do share the same number of reference files.
Come on, folks - can anyone tell us why different systems include differing numbers of reference files??

16,368 is the current number of items that Spybot is now looking for and I have the latest Beta updates as well. I DO NOT USE tea timer and DO NOT download the update for it which should not make any difference.
Latest detection file is 7-28-2004 which was released yesterday.
I suggest you uninstall Spybot, reboot and then reinstall and update the program. Make sure you exit the program after update then run it and see what number you are at. You can always go to Help/About to find out the latest information about Spybot.

Hi Gary, Tommyo, Kevin the TD!
The Spybot home web site has update download available for 29 July! I have just been there and downloaded the new reference files and guess what.........I've now got 17,907!!!
Have you tried this method, Gary?? First time I have!

My figure of 17,970 is somewhat misleading since I have discovered it includes all tracking programs/files within Microsoft and Windows - 2400 of them (in Settings, File Sets): I had turned these off since they were doing no harm (marked in green on the result lists)!!
Kevin The TD - if you took out the beta files how many do you have on your systems??

thanks all, uninstalled then reinstalled gone up to 15501 which is what i think it should be.
still unsure why i couldnt download updates on previous installation anyone know why?
one for you kevin,i havent activated the teatimer option this time or downloaded teatimer update. what is it and why should we not use it?
nice one guys!

hi abnormal,
i think its when its 2or3 in the afternoon, your on vacation somewhere in england, and someone asks your if you've got time for a cup of tea,,,,,teatimer,
but seriously folks, teatimer is a registry monitor that spybot uses to protect against bad processes or something like that. it pops up when there is a change in the registry and asks you if you accept the change or reject it, something like regprot does.
all the best,
murve

I'm one of a few (as far as I can tell) who quite likes the strangely named TeaTimer factility.
It can interefere at times (such as when defragging). Although I wanted it running on boot up I also wanted the option to turn it off. Fine, you can do that from the system tray icon but there was no facility to turn it back on again without rebooting. To overcome this I made a shortcut in QuickLaunch to:
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
Simple stuff, but may be of interest to some newbie.

Just downloaded Spybot for my other comp and got the latest update. Its running XP Pro and says 15,501 items.
