It's starting to look (at least to me) like SpyBot is dead; it's been a very long time since it was updated. I remember quite a while ago they had a problem with a bad update, which was repaired with the release of the Beta version, and I can't remember if there's been an update since that release. On the other hand, AdAware's been updating 3-4 times a week. That seems to make running SpyBot a waste of time. Telling a newbie to D'L/update/run SpyBot just gives that person false hope/security.

"Telling a newbie to D'L/update/run SpyBot just gives that person false hope/security."
Why is that so? Lets all not forget that Ad-Aware left us all hanging for many months. If you think Spybot is dead why do you not write them an e-mail and ask them why they have not provided a recent update?
I am sure they have a reason just as Ad-Aware did when they left us hanging. Spybot is free. The people that support it do not get paid so please do not complain.
If you want to knock free software go somewhere else and it is not pointless to stop recommending a great piece of software.

I believe you accused me of the same thing when I asked pretty much the same question about a month ago. Why are you assuming someone is bashing spybot? I'm not getting that at all from this post. The only thing I see is someone asking if anyone has heard what's going on.
If you didn't do that to me then I apologize. I would like to know if anyone has heard anything too. When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

Ok,
I took it upon myself to send them an e-mail and if I get a responce I will post it but in the mean time I do not need folks knocking Spybot on the forum.

angrymen2001,
Why ask an open message board and not go to the source? If I want to know why my phone bill was so high last month I am not going to post it on a forum. I am going to call the phone company.
When you state things such as this in your post...
"Telling a newbie to D'L/update/run SpyBot just gives that person false hope/security."
I will jump on your back big time and let you know how I feel. To ask is one thing, to imply false information is another.

I think you have touched a raw nerve with this complaint. Spybot has undergone some severe denial of service attacks. He has had scumbags copy the program and then offer it for sale as another spyware program on the internet. The regulars at this forum had to give specific websites that were safe and authorized to download Spybot from. Recently I have had problems updating new installations for people. I have tried using all the servers from Europe, Australia and the US, which never happened before. Send in a donation to help them out with all the legal claims and crap. The man and his support team are fighting for us for free, so support them. I do have a suggestion for you if you use Adaware, get the plus or pro versions to help them pay their expenses.

Kevin
You are right about the phone or email to ask and I'm not trying to start an argument here. I also agree that those 2 statements were not necessary. But I also say that this is a forum for people to discuss if anyone else know anything. There are times where I have emailed a company and have never received a response (not spybot though). I commend the people of spybot and the great efforts they do for us. And I continue to install, or tell people to install spybot in their's.When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

"Telling a newbie to D'L/update/run SpyBot AT THIS TIME just gives that person false hope/security." How's that,KTTD? Or do you think the program is up-to-date? I'm not bashing the program at all, and definately not complaining. In the past, I've posted many times that I thought SpyBot was a much better program than AdAware since running it behind AdAware always uncovered more. For the last few months though, I consider AdAware the better program since it is currently totally functional. Why do you get so " " uptight so often?

JohnO,
Explain how and why it gives someone a false sense of security? Just because they have not given any new updates since March?
Those are the words that touched my nerve and nothing more. You could have left that simple statement out and I would not have jumped on your back.
Capt said it best for the most part. They are trying and please understand that. They work for free and when something is free NO BODY has any right to complain. I am sure Spybot will rebound in time just as Lavasoft did with Ad-Aware.

I'm going to chime in here...
"Telling a newbie to D'L/update/run SpyBot just gives that person false hope/security."
A false sense of hope and security, huh?
Since I am an obnoxiously vocal proponent of download/update/run for SpyBot (and anything else you use) I will say this much.
Many people come here with NO HOPE or SENSE OF SECURITY. They are at their wits end, and have hit the end of the skills. ANYTHING that can help them is better than they where they were at before they came. Yes, SpyBot has not been updated since March. And I don't care.
Not being updated since March borders on the irrelevant. SpyBot is still one of the most useful utilities a user with spyware/adware problems can try.
Are we somehow under the impression that only the threats that emerged last month are causing people problems?
Its very much the opposite. We tend to think that way, but it just ain't so. Most people have had spyware problems since they first put their PC on the Internet. To this day, SpyBot finds and fixes things that Ad-Aware does not. Ad-Aware finds and fixes things that SpyBot does not. Pretty impressive if you consider that Ad-Aware seems to be udpated almost daily and we haven't had a spybot update in 2 months.
A RULE OF TECH:
If it works....use it!
I will keep using SpyBot and recommending it to others until the wheels fall off.
Why?
BECAUSE IT WORKS!

To Whom it may con.....,
I've said this here before, don't know the address, I'm at a dif computer.
Spybot S&&D, is at 1.3 RC5 right now. It's being poked and proded ;-) to get the bugs worked out. Before the final 1.3, is released. Don't know, of the top of my head, but some includes, I think are at 5/3/04.
Go HERE!, and read about it. As Kevin said, go to the "source". Hmmm, can't remember who's sig it was, but something about trusting.... Nevermind
Good Luck all,
P.S. NO, It's NOT DEAD!!

The thing that makes me angry is that I have not found any information about this lack of updates from the Spybot S&D web site. I as a user don't know whether the company has stopped producing updates completely, or if it's experiencing technical problems or if my copy of Spybot is corrupted. I don't know! Because the only (dis)information I seem to find is from these offtopic unofficial forums.
