spybot freezes

Many times when I start to run spybot search and destroy my computer will freeze (the mouse won't do anything) before spybot finishes searching everything. Is there another free software which is the equivalent. I am using avast anti-virus now, free version. Does that have the functions of spybot or an adware remover? I am using lavasoft ad-aware SE personal right now and that seems to run OK.
