We use Sygate Personal Firewall on our Windows ME systems. Sygate lists EVERYTHING that is running on your machine.
Just today we discovered through a routine check of the logs and the running applications that "aornum.exe" was active. Aornum is a "gift" to us from iWon.com. Had we not had the Sygate firewall running, we would never have known that we had spyware active on our PC's. Our solution to the problem was to delete "aornum.exe" and set the firewall to block traffic to/from that application. This may not be the solution that security resources have in mind, but for us it works. The bottom line for us is that we don't run any Windows machine without having some form of firewall software running. Sygate's free download has proven to be invaluable. After years of working with all flavors of Windows, the Sygate package is the only application I've seen that will discover and allow you to control every hidden program running under Windows. ...Well worth your time!
By the way, the machine that we discovered "aornum.exe" running on, has the latest security upgrades installed from MicroSoft and is configured not to allow file and print sharing. Internet Explorer is configured to require manual permission for cookies and other remotely delivered items; and yet the iWon folks manage to send AND install their spyware file. Bottom line... Regardless of how tightly you secure your Windows machine, you really should not expect that uninvited software won't be installed. You need to have some form of firewall running... We prefer Sygate. It has proven itself time and again.
