I am getting the sp.reg error. Several days ago I updated my McAfee Virus Scan and found I had the JS/Seeker.U virus, a medium risk virus that "hijacks" your browser opening page. I went to the online McAfee virus library to read about it and find out what to do about it. My virus pgm. told me that this particular virus could not be "cleaned" and I would have to delete the affected files (one of which was the sp.reg file), then reinstall them. I deleted them, but now I cannot find the needed file to reinstall it. I don't know what pgm. had the file initially. I've reinstalled Windows 98 and my IE browser 6.0, hoping that would fix it, but on startup I still get the same error message, "Cannot import C:/Windows/sp.reg: error opening the file, may be a disk or file system error". I've attempted to find the solution by following the link suggested in an old forum on this problem by Tufenuf, but have been unsuccessful in finding the forum and solution regarding this problem. Any step-by-step help would be greatly appreciated. Everything seems to be working fine on my computer, the browser is no longer "hijacked", but that annoying error message still occurs. Thanks.

They insert a key into your registry under
localmachine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
the key name is sp, and the value is
regedit -s c:\Windows\sp.reg
DELETE THIS KEY.
You can also delete sp.reg and sp.dll from your Windows folder.

Thank you to all who replied. The problem is now fixed plus I was able to "uncheck" a couple of other pgms. that launch automatically on startup. I appreciate the quick responses and helpful info. AND I learned a wee bit more about my pc and how it works. :)

"Web page dailogue" i believe is due to the sp.reg installing itself. This is what it enters into the registry

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
"SearchURL"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Default_Search_URL"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"
"Search Page"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"
"Search Bar"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"
"SearchURL"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"="http://www.znext.com/ie/"

TO get rid of that web page dialogue, do a search in the registry for znext, and delete all the entries corresponding to the above file. Hope this helps

continued from previous...

Some may have different reg entries, or different http redirects.

If you are unable to find "zdnet" in the registry, go to the specific key mentioned in the previous post and delete the values.
