Anyone know why my Norton Utilities 2002, Speed Disk keeps telling me to optimise my harddrive, even after Norton has finished the Speeddisk process it later alerts me (-red traffic light signal)that my harddrive is 95% fragmented?! & needs to Speed disk/optimise! Again!?
A bit of a repetitive nuisance!
Maybe I need to upgrade, but my pc isnt connected to the internet.
I could use my laptop which I use instead to connect to the internet.
Any advise appreciated.
Thanks

Most likely that you have a stack of background programs running. You can get an idea by looking at how many icons you have in the system tray (bottom right), hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del keys or typing msconfig in the Run box.

If there are a lot, you have to ask if you really need them running all the time and whether some can be operated from shortcuts or uninstalled altogether.

Virus or malware is a possibility (though less likely) but if you are not on the internet you shouldn't get any.

The other option is to not use Speedisk. HD optimization is not that important on a modern machine. Just use the normal XP defrag from time to time instead.
