sony vaio won't boot

March 19, 2009 at 14:19:43
Specs: Windows XP
My 16 yr old was on my laptop the other day and got a pop up telling her there was a virus and to click OK to fix it. She says it would not go away so she clicked it and it told her it needed to shut down. No I can't log on Windows. If I click on the user and try to log on it says "logging on, saving your settings, logging off, please enter your password to log on" and just continues to go in this circle without attempting to actually log in. I have tried safemode and can't do it from there either. How can I fix the virus if I can't get on the computer!

if you can find an xp install cd, home for home, pro for pro, because you cannot mix & match, you can do a repair install:

to me that is the safest route. Then once the PC is repaired do some extensive virus and spyware checks on it.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Thanks for the answer. My problem is that everything I am reading says to "configure your computer to boot to a CD" in order to do the recovery or repair. Since I cannot log onto Windows, how do I get it to boot to a CD?

You don't do that in Windows. That setting is in the BIOS. Or, depending on which manufacturer made your computer, you may be able to bring up a boot menu to select the CD to boot from. What brand is it?

A Sony Vaio.

I searched on their website and message boards but could not find the information to do this which is what led me here.
thanks again,
