I posted a Hijack This log to this site earlier today, but it looks like it was deleted before I could read either of the replies.

As far as I could tell, I followed the right protocol for posting. (I ran SpyBot first and got rid of everything it found before running the HT scan.)

Could someone let me know if I did something wrong? I really need some help with my computer.

So. . . I went there. Posted my Hijack This log and clicked "Analyze."

The results:

"It seems that you don't use an anti-virus scanner or your scanner is not active. Only an anti-virus scanner can protect you against new viruses. You can look here for a good anti-virus scanner.

We couldn't detect any active process of a firewall on your system."

I have both. AVG is installed on my computer, and appears (externally) to be running fine. I also have Windows firewall on the highest settings.

If this is somehow secretly not the case, I don't know how or how to change it since both of these things look normal.

I see. (I had it checked before, but I didn't realize what it was.) Thank you.

I have two "possibly nasties:"

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

"Possibly nasty! According to our database this process runs normally in c:\windows\system\! Check if you know this process and arrange a viruscheck where required."

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\javaw.exe

"Possibly nasty! According to our database this process runs normally in c:\programme\java\jre1.5.0_05\bin\! Check if you know this process and arrange a viruscheck where required."

Do you know what I should do next to try to clean these two things up?

Hmmm. . . I tried uploading to the first link, but I'm a little unsure how to use this tool.

I think I might be in over my head. . .

I don't know what the information it gives is really telling me or how to know if it's really a virus and/or malicious in some way or not.

... browse to the files and upload them....ie:

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

... then click upload... they'll be scanned by @ least 7+ different antivirus scanners and show you the results in real time!

... I suspect that they're ok! ....just to be sure!

Files with the correct name but in the wrong place can be viruses. However, analyzers can sometimes be a bit outdated or even wrong.

I have checked carefully and don't believe there is anything wrong with either of those two entries or their locations. Pretty well the same on my XP machine.

The only general comment I would make is that your Java requires updating. Go to:
"Control Panel > Java > Update tab".
Click on the "Update Now" button. It "usually" works although I've found it can sometimes be necessary to go to the Java update website instead. The current Java version is 6_16.

May I ask:
Do you think you have a virus for some reason or other, and what problems (if any) are you experiencing?

some other bloke...

I'm suspicious mainly because my machine is running *REALLY* slowly. It's always been a little slower than normal to start, but these days it takes upwards of 5 minutes just to get everything started up, and once it is running, it seems like it takes longer than it should to do things, especially anything online.

I realize that there could be lots of other reasons why a computer runs slowly or affecting browsing speed, but my antivirus software (which used to find at least a few "warnings" every day) stopped finding anything at all and now consistently finds absolutely nothing. I guess it just seemed suspicious to me and made me wonder if my computer had been hacked and was being used for some nefarious purpose (like sending out lots of spam).

Sorry for not being more clear with my earlier ask for help with this. I did upload both files with no problem; it was just the results I had trouble interpreting. How do I know if these are ok or viruses once it's scanned the files? (Sorry if this is a really dumb question.)

If your PC is running really slow to start up, click start/run and type in msconfig.
Start by removing startup items that don't need to be run. If you get confused, google the entries and see if they have to run at startup.

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

It's not just at startup. It's when I try to do anything.

I did actually start to do that, though. . . which is what led me to running Hijack This in the first place. Now I'm just really confused.
