As I turned on the computer this morning it didn't work. I could turn it on and hear it start, but the screen was black although it was on. I tried everything. Checked the cables. Turned the screen off and then on again. Nothing worked. I restarted the computer but with no luck.
The screen is on but instead of the green button shining, the yellow button shines. Just like it is on stand by. Very frustrating. So I have another very old computer (but it works) and figured that if I replaced the screen with another one maybe the problem would be solved. So I did and at first it worked but then the same thing happened. The screen turned itself off to stand by mode. The strange thing is that as soon as I unplugged the screen from the computer (but still had it on) the screenbutton immediately changed from yellow to green and the whole screen started working fine.
So it's not the screen. It's the computer.
It won't react to a startfloppy (or maybe it does, I don't know cause I can't see anything...) or to the F8 command (Win98). The computer has been working fine always until yesterday. It has internet and it was used just before this problem appeared. I tried every possible thing (with internet unplugged off course) but nothing happens. It's like something from the Internet placed itself on my computer and changed some important files. It's like the computer is told to kill whatever I'm trying to do. I almost know that it's some kind of virusthing from the net.Is there anyone who had/are having the same problem?
I had hours and hours of homework on that computer and I don't know what to do. How can I fix the problem if I can't see what's on the screen? I would be really happy if anyone could help me out.
(I'm sorry for my bad english, it's not my mothertounge)

Hi,
Your English is fine.
I don't think it's an infection. I thinks it's hardware.
UNPLUG the power cable, open the case and find the video card. It's the one the screen cable goes to. Remove the screw which holds it in, pull it up and out of it's slot, push it back in and replace the screw. Try again.
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

While you are at it you could clean the edge connectors of the video card with a pencil eraser. This often helps.
