I apologize if this has been asked a thousand times. I'm just wondering what software firewall you all would recommend?
Thanks.

I can tell you that many of the firewalls out there that claim to work with Windows 9x and such many of them I have found to be false.
Some of the best free firewalls I have used are ZoneAlarm and Kerio, but the thing to keep in mind is that with both of those they won't work good on older windows operating systems at all.
I highly recommend that any user of the older operating systems like Win98 SE use a different firewall rather than ZoneAlarm. It says its comptaible on many websites, but in the readme from ZoneLabs it says that it supports like Windows 2000, Windows XP and such. I have had so many log lockup problems with Win98 SE and ZoneAlarm that I couldn't count how many times it has hard locked the computer sometimes. Another computer running Windows XP has none of these log related issues what so ever with the log files.
For the situation with Keiro Firewall, I just read something on their website that they will not be doing anymore updates after December of this year, but the firewall is good firewall though too. Just keep in mind that enhancements and other things to Kerio may soon be in the past. Don't get me wrong though, Kerio is good firewall too, but same issues as with ZoneAlarm pretty much...its latest versions won't work with older windows versions.
I have still about the same question that you have with finding a firewall for older versions of Windows like Win98 SE.
Software firewalls that are free now days seem to work with the newer operating systems just use that as a fact I guess.

I have tried Kerio, Zone Alarm and Sygate. They are all "simple" enough, but I found Sygate was the best as far as demands on free memory.

I recommend ZoneAlarm because I use it on three computers without any problem whatsoever. One and one-half years old e-machines desktop on XP; Six years old e-machines 400MHz on win 98; Two years old Toshiba laptop on XP.
I picked up a virus on the Toshiba within a few minutes of starting it from new out-of-the-box. Thats when I investigated anti-virus and malware detection/prevention software. Avast! AV, Spybot, AdAware, HiJack this, and CrapCleaner. Free and works fine for me.
