My boss received an email that took him to a site that just had a smiley face and a message to have a nice day. Now, every time he reboots, his IE home page is reset to http://kov4l.com (not a nice site). I have edited his registry, looked at all the files under sysedit and can not find what is causing this to be reset. Does anyone have an idea? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Go to: http://www.spyware.com/hijacked.html, and you should be able to recover from the hijacked homepage. Please educate your boss about internet security and safety, as the result could have been much harder to correct than this one. All the best!

Errr.... I'm feeling pretty silly by the site you gave me redirected me to this site (http://www.roar.com/client/?sh=1009) and I don't know where to go from there. Would you make it a little clearer for me? It appears I'm having a blonde moment...

Capt left out the "info" for the http://www.spywareinfo.com site That is an easy thing to do when typing fast; have done it myself. :)

Norm got the URL correct. The info on that site will solve your problem and tell how to prevent future similar problems.

good luck.

Thanks for the other url. *S*

Jon, I have tried resetting his home page but every time he reboots, it goes back to the other page. :( Can't figure out where that is getting reset. I've checked every startup file, every *.ini file that I know of and there is no reference to that site. If you check the registry upon reboot (before starting IE), the home page has already been set to the "bad" page so it's happening at a lower level than IE.

I'll try the spyware stuff. Just have to find a time to get on his machine. Thanks everyone!

use regedit and go to
hkey_current_user>software>microsoft>windows>currentversion>run

there should be a "regedit.exe c:/windows/system/win*****.tmp"
or something similar key there

that is the thing that resets it
feel free to check out the file if you don't trust me :P it is readable with a simple text editor :P
