Hello :o)
I am here once again to ask for some help and advice.
Lately I have noticed that it takes longer for some web sites to load.
Not all, but some.
I was wondering if that's because of their servers?
OR,
if it could be because of worm . mimail . R found in C:\RESTORE\TEMP\A0003976 a cpl weeks ago.
I have since purged the worm thingy from there via disabling system restore, and done scans with NAV and Housecall and Adaware which all say my system is clean.
I figure that the worm found its way to my Restore folder when an email containing the attachment was caught by NAV and thus quarentined and deleted.
Anyway, I suppose my question is this: Could it be that my PC is infected by something else? Or just that some of the sites I visit are on busy servers?
I always make sure that my antivirus is up to date, as well as Adaware.
My system performance is usually between 76-83% if that means anything :oS
Insight from anyone here would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Jodie

I asked the same question on the XP forum yesterday (slow internet). It turned out that my browser cache was set at 180 megabytes--way too large. After resetting the cache to 20, my speed returned to what it normally was.
I'm not saying you don't have a virus, trojan or worm, just that you might check your browser cache. For dialup, it should be set between 15 to 25MB. For broadband or cable, a setting between 5 to 15MB.
A friend of mine runs Windows Millennium on cable with a 13MB cache setting and his PC is lightning fast.

Hi Jodie, I'm just guessing here, as I'm fairly new to my computer, but did you clean out all of the temp internet files? And is your amt of cache set too high? I have read before, that if your cache setting is set too high, that it can slow down the browser speed.
I had mine set way too high, and I lowered it to 10MB where it says "amount of disc space to use". I found that it helped me a little.
Good luck, I hope this is helpful a little bit. If not, re-post here again, and someone hopefully, with more experience than I have, will shed some more light on it.

Hey IronMan - I must be a psychic, LOL !!!!
I guess we were both typing at the same time!!! Have a good evening!

A good evening to you, too, Tommyo.
It's a rainy and dreary night here in the Southeast. But besides the PC, we've got beer, barbeque, and the best movies in the Suds Theatre.
Enjoy your weekend.

Just me again !ob
Thanks for all your help.
My cache speed was set at 1 MB for some reason. One of my hubby's friends must have been "helping' to tweak my PC, lol.
I am on cable internet, but I put set it at 20 MB. It seems to go a bit faster now.
Thanks again everyone! You ALL rock!!!!
If it acts up again, I'll be back. But hopefully things will continue working the way they are now.......
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Jodie

Jodie:
1 megabyte?. A bit too small for happy surfing, indeed. Let alone cable, it wouldn't work well with a T1 line.
Glad you found at least a partial solution. If you still have problems, post back on this thread.
Now. . .back to Suds Theatre.

Glad to hear that, Jodie......I'm also on broadband cable, and I've got my cache set to 10MB; but I think I'm gonna set it to 15 or 20 and see what happens.
Enjoy your weekend, also!! Take care.

Hi all,
i'm not sure what you all mean by "cache speed" and were to find these settings.
Do i find it in Internet options=>general=>temp internet files=>settings?

Good day, tamtam.....Yes, I adjusted the cache in Internet Options, Temp Internet Files, then click the Settings. Mine was always set to 180MB, but I have read that I had it set too high; so I lowered it to 20MB.
I actually don't have enough knowledge yet to know if that adjustment alone helped my speed, but I do run periodic speed tests, and I am now at 5,104MBPS for a 1,464 MB file. I can't analyize those numbers, but the test site says it is about T-2 speeds; so I'm assuming that is good. I am on Comcast cable modem.
Like I said, I'm not sure if that adjustment helped my speed, but it apparently did not hurt it. Take care tamtam; have a great Sunday!!
~Tommyo

Thnx tommyo.I wasn't aware that these adjustments could do so much. I'm on cable and should be fast.I was on 10MB.Will check different MB's and see what's happening.
have a great sunday too, mine is almost over

I know I'm a little late, but I wanted to add my two cents. Viruscanners and firewalls affect surf speed more than anything ese and while 180 MB is much too large I think 15 might be low. Other factors include MTU (Max Packet size) as well as RWIN (Receive window size). There's no easy answer since each machine as well as connection could be different. There are quite a few places to test and tweak your system.
Just remember before you tweak your registry - back it up.
