Solved Should I use a VPN?

Specs: several
My new HP Windows 10 Home laptop came with Avast SecureLine
installed and seemingly enabled. There were two tasks supporting
it set in Task Scheduler, and a service set to automatic start. It is a
virtual private network (VPN).

Is this something most users need, want, or actually use?

Reading a web page about VPNs in general (not Avast specifically),
it is an online service that is usually paid for monthly, like an ISP.
Is this primarily a con, and only secondarily a service?

Avast VPN is subscription based:

Whether you use a VPN or not is a personal choice:

They are not widely used by the public at large.
