You'll need to explain a little more.
When you attach what kind of USB device? Any USB device? Just USB flash drives? Which folders become shortcuts? The ones on your computer or the ones on the flash drive?
How do you know they've become shortcuts?
When you remove the USB device, do all your folders go back to normal?

See if this will work:

Click on Start, and at the search area, type: cmd
Click: OK

Right click the command file, and select: Run as Administrator

At the command prompt that appears, copy/paste the following:

attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*

Press: Enter

Note: Assumed your USB drive is g:
If not, please replace the letter g with your USB drive letter!

Now, check the files in the USB drive...

Next, please download RogueKiller
Save it to your Desktop.

Now, close all open programs.

For XP, simply double-click RogueKiller.exe
For Vista/Windows 7, right click the file and select: Run as Administrator

When prompted, type 1 and hit Enter.

An RKreport.txt should appear on your Desktop.

Note: If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe

>>Please post the contents of the >RKreport.txt< in your reply.<<

Note: This tool is first used as a diagnostic (Option #1) to see where the problems are, and then used to take further action based on the results of its report.

It doesn't matter what device only that it only has to enter the USB port and loads into the computer that all the folders on the portablewwea device (not computer) are turned to shortcut, I know they are shortcuts as the arrow on the folder and when I click on the folder it asks me if I want to delete the shortcut or not. All folders in the device turn to shortcuts, it doesn't matter whether there are anything in them the folders become shortcuts however being shorcuts they still take up the space. if i take the Portable device out and then put it into another computer the folders are still shortcuts and it doesn't seem to spread it by the USB so I don't know how I exactly got it

Download Unhide.exe to your Desktop:

If the file does not download, copy/paste the following link >without brackets or quotes< in the address bar of your browser:

Right click on unhide.exe and select: Run as Administrator
Allow the program to run.

This program removes the hidden attribute from all the files on your hard drives.

Let us know how it goes.
