Hi

My computer gave up the ghost 48hrs ago. started off as blue screen then when I powered it back up I first get system32/shimeng.dll is corrupt and unreadable, when I click through that and finally get to my logon I enter my password only to be login.exe won't work.

What has happened to my computer, my childs photos are on there from birth and I have important documents on there I really need to retrieve.

I don't have an XP cd or disk, I can't get to logon to use the run feature, I think I'm well and truely up the creek if you know what I mean.

I need desparate help.

I would say pull out the drive and connect it to another computer first. That will let you browse the drive and copy your photos and such to a safe location.

After that I would recommend running diskchk on the drive, as you may have some corruption issues. If that doesn't fix it, you may need to repair Windows XP which will require a XP CD.

Hi

I only have one computer so I have no other drive to move my drive too?

I've run all the diagnostics on the pc, I just need to access my account to move stuff cause if the computer is stuffed then I'll toss it.

I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy of XP CD.

You don't need to "toss" it. It can certainly be repaired. However, if your drive is corrupted, or damaged, your priority would be getting your data off it safely... which you will need a second computer for.

Get a friend with knowledge to connect the disk to his computer as RTAdams89 suggested and save the precious data.

This is the only way for YOU to save your stuff.

I can explain you how to boot from a boorable Winternals CD rom and copy stuff from your disk to an USB stick or what ever but that will only confuse you more and the risk of losing everything will be greater.

Besides that ....
You will still have your backups of your documents and precious pictures don't you ?? DOHHHHH
