I'm having serious problems with my computer. My computer came with Norton Antivirus 2004, but the subscription has worn off. Upon recieving my first discovered virus, i decided i should start using a free one that i could update whenever they become available instead of paying to update. The problem is, as soon as i restarted my computer I found several unexpected problems. For example, I cannot access my start menu, and I have cannot shut down many programs, including the warning that my "computer may be at risk" and that "my virus protection status is unkown" ballon that has been sitting there since i started up. My clock stopped, and i cannot access either msn.com or hotmail.com, which as far as i know are the only way to access my e-mail. I also can't use any of the online virus scans available, because they active-x controls aren't functioning properly (i click to install them when prompted or the option never becomes available and it still doesn't work.) My Norton won't work (it tells me i need to reinstall it,) and i can't create a shortcut to my new antivirus software. I really need help.

Andrew, Try to run the UK Free version of HouseCall on-line scan which is based on Java Technologie unlike the US version which requires ActiveX. Here's the link.

Either that, or just install bitdefender anti-virus. I don't think it uses active-X technology for the application.

Good luck
