This is about the program name sentry.exe

I was gonna post this on a thread, but it said the thread was too old, well I typed all this, so I'm gonna post it here, please don't think I'm spamming, I'm just trying to help others.

Well, I know this is gonna be pretty far down on the page, but I figure I'll post this anyways. My brother uses Kazaa on this computer and it also had the Sentry program. I'll list what I did to remove it, mostly repeating what was said above, but at least it will all be in one post ;)

1) In Win9x/ME/XP (2k?) you can run MSCONFIG from the run button in the windows button. You can then click the tab that says Startup, locate Sentry in the list and then uncheck the box. (this is also a way to disable any other annoying startup programs)

2) Use the Find/Search button from the Windows button and type "sentry", searching in "My Computer"(including subfolders checked, duh), to find all of the files associated with this program. You can then delete them right from that window, which will move them to the recycle bin. Then empty the recycle bin.

3) Back to the run option from windows, type in REGEDIT. Don't be too scared to go into the registry. If your worried, just go upto the File command and select export, and you can backup your registry in case you really do screw something up. Using the explorer style [+]&[-] tree on the left, work your way toward the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" or "Run-" section and delete Sentry (notice how this kinda looks like the msconfig startup menu *wink). Then work your way towards "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc" Find Spec MRU and you can change the value for the ones referring to Sentry by double clicking on them and changing it to whatever you want, like explorer or yahoo, whatever.

I'm slightly computer literate, and I believe this should nip it in the bud. Although it may be overkill, overkill is good in this case.

I'm sure if your here you already have a firewall program, but I think ZoneAlarm free is a pretty decent one. Yet it can get finicky at times. And AVG is a decent free antivirus program. I hope this is spam, but I'll just post a link to their sites below.

www.zonelabs.com for ZA

www.grisoft.com for AVG

Good luck,

I would uninstall Kazaa. Get SpyBot and Ad-aware from Lurkhere and run those scans to get rid of all the spyware that Kazaa had. It has much more spyware and crud than just sentry.exe included in it. Then download and install Kazaalite, which does not have spyware. Make sure that he knows the dangers of using Kazaa and uses AVG to scan all Kazaa downloads, and closely monitors Zone Alarm for incoming/outgoing traffic, as you can get some very nasty viruses/trojans/worms only by using Kazaa.
