Security/Virus problems with Kazaa

Hello ppl,

Iam using KazaaLite and i disabled uploads and use it only to download files. I have zone alarm and norton antivirus (live updated virus definitions everyday).
I wanted to know what are the security risks with kazaa. As far as my knowledge goes ... unless u run an infected file .. u cannot activate the virus.

Recently i noticed that eventhough i had this firewall, antivirus combination .. i was infected with a backdoor virus which presumably opens my computer up for hackers. I manually scan every file i download and ensure it is free from viruses. But one fine day .. norton's autoprotect informed me that i had this virus.

Does using kazaa itself ... upload some virus files onto my PC? Or can users hack into my comp from kazaa itself?(since i allow zonealarm to give kazaa access to internet).
I am sure many of you might also be having these concerns ... especially after being unable to prevent attacks even after having all the so-called latest security software!!

cheers!
Ramesh

Actually I have no concerns w/my firewall or AV software. I can't remember the last virus, trojan, spyware, ad-ware, etc. that I caught. As for your question. What type of access to the internet have you given kazaa? Full or filtered?

Hi underdog,

Under filter settings in my kazalite:
Family filter:- OFF
Miscellaneous filters :- 2nd two are checked
Blocklist :- full-downloader, full-installer

As for my specific question ... i wanted to know if just by using kazaa .. is there any risk of being hacked? Also Does using kazaa itself ... upload some virus files onto my PC?

Thanks,
Ramesh

Hey Ramesh - I don't want to sound evasive, but we are suceptible to hacks from anyplace anytime. I think your chances of being hacked by kazaa is pretty minimal. No system can be 100% safe, home or office. If you keep your virus defs. up todate you lessen the chance. A good rule of thumb is to scan anything you download before executing, or opening it. If you have a way of setting ZA to allow or not allow Internet connections on an individual session, that would give you more control. If you suspect a hack just run "netstat -a" and look @ what ports are open and there status.

Iam not against sharing .... after i found the virus on my computer i was unsure of what was causing it. I wanted to know whether kazaa was secretly acting as a server to allow anonymous connections also(in addition to the normal upload in kazaa).
