Security features of routers

Here is the router thing again. I have a few related questions.
1) Is any router with WAN configuration capable of doing the firewall thing? (This has been addressed before, but I'm looking for clarification.)
2) Do routers do the same job in broadband as in dialup? For that matter, aare there dialup routers? And is there any crossover, that is, would a broadband router work with dialup, or vice versa?
I'm not networking, and this is for W98SE. I have to figure out which way to go so that my better half can buy me a router for Christmas.

Hi Doghead, I'm pretty sure the answer to question 1 is yes. IMHO, dialup users don't really need a router solely for firewall purposes, simply because dialup users are a bit harder to get at.
They do the same job regardless of the way you connect, putting a broadband router on a dialup connection wouldn't make things worse. If you're on dialup, a well-tested and regarded software firewall would more than likely do just fine.
Really features are the only thing that are different on a router unless you are going wireless, then you would have to have a router designated for wireless connections.
