Comment:

getting rid of many old pc's, ranging from windows 98 up to windows 2000. I'd like to secure wipe the disks as easy as possible, the clients want to donate the computers. I'm looking for something that I can boot from (cd or floppy) and wipe the entire disk regardless of the existing partition structure. Preferably one button. Most of the old utilities (wipeinfo, etc) I know of will require many steps. What can you all recommend?

I know this may be better suited in the 98 forums, but I wanted to get a wider range of opinions.

Killdisk is a decent tool and it is free. The free version does not meet the military specs though, the pro version does. You could always run it more than twice though. What I do is reformat with Linux, then I run Killdisk twice. HTH
Killdisk is at this link;

When it comes for the military and government body (that knows what they are doing) to get rid of the old PC, they first remove the HDs. They then shred it to pieces and scatter it across various graveyard as an absolutely safety precautions.

thanks for the answers guys. I'm downloading it now!

Usually i drill holes in the drives and toss them (it's very fun!), then let the client decide what to do with the pc's. This is a special case.

I use "Darik's Boot 'N Nuke"; google for a download site. It has several wipe options including DOD spec. Freeware.

Five pound sledge works well. Acetylene cutting torch probably would work--don't breathe the fumes. Drill holes ought to work too...
