search redirect plus

Specs: Windows XP
The problems started with the search redirect virus a couple of weeks ago. I ran Spybot and Malwarebytes but neither picked up the virus. Now, in addition to the redirect, the internet crashes often. Sometimes several times within a few minutes. When it got the virus, I was using Internet Explorer. I switched to Firefox, but of course the problem is still there. Also, regedit won't open. It closes the entire window if I even try to scan it for a virus. Can this be fixed? Thanks for any help you can give.

You should scan your computer in Safe Mode (Restart the computer and press F8 and select Safe Mode) with Malwarebytes.

Thanks for the idea. I tried it, but it didn't work. Any other suggestions?
