I THOUGHT i had it all figured out but the fact was, after manually deleting scvhost.exe i keep getting (every time i restart) the pop-up message that says: "Windows cannot find 'scvhost.exe'. You may have type the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search.", here's an image i uploaded: http://aycu37.webshots.com/image/87...

I think Jboy was right in saying that scvhost.exe is a malicious program, and especially when i am running an winME o/s.

Please let me know if i can do anything to fix it, because I'll lose all my family pictures if i use system recovery CD-- I'll use it as a last resort, any help is appreciated, thanks.

**Sorry for posting this on Windows Me-- forgot there was a Security&Virus help forum.

I want to be an electronic/computer engineer, but it is hard to choose between graphic design/animation.

BASIC FACT !!!!

NOT all programs run from the well known ".exe", many run from a ".dll"!

In order for these programs to initiate, there MUST be a "Svchost.exe" located at C:\WINNT\System32\.

Deleting this file IS the cause of your problem!

PUT IT BACK! and the problem will go away!

Martin, the OS in question is Windows Millennium, so nothing at all like any NT based winversion - - that too is a 'basic fact'

As spelled: scvhost.exe is (or was) very likely bad news

Louis, if all that's happening is that Windows can't find the file, that's nothing serious in and of itself - it means that file is gone, and all you may need to do is to find and remove whatever entry is attempting to load the thing.

You could try searching system.ini or the registry, or even employ 'hijackthis' to find and disable the line

That's alright - a decent tool for registry searches is the freeware app, RegSeeker - although HJT may be sufficient
