Subject: Safe to Open Router Ports?OS: Windows XP SP2CPU/Ram: AMD Sempron 3100+ @ 2.0 G |
Comment: Is it safe to open (and leave open) TCP/UDP ports on your router's firewall after you've installed another firewall, in my case Sygate? I'm thinking yes, but I need confirmation. I hate having to login to my router's config to close ports everytime I close an app that needs port forwarding.

Reply: (edit)No one can give you a positive confirmation when it comes to leaving ports open. It's always safer to leave the ports closed. But if there is a need to open them, Sygate should be enough protection. I would however make sure you have nothing important on the drive (bank statements, passwords, etc...), and I would not be surfing unknown websights.

Reply: (edit)If you are port forwarding for P2P programs I recommend you think twice before doing that, especially since you may experience port flooding and constant connections to open ports even after you close the program you were using. Sygate could block most of these attempts, but your internet connection might experience a rapid slowdown while your router gets hammered by constant connection attempts. I think you will be much safer with the ports closed. It's your call. Θ ER4S3R ΘBeware of computer programmers that carry screwdrivers.
