Comment:

I had the error message about an RPC error and that the system would restart in 60 seconds and I could not close it out and it counted down and restarted in 60 seconds. From everything I read, this is the blaster worm virus. I have norton anti-virus on my system and update my virus defs weekly. I went to Microsofts site and downloaded and applied the patch. I manually updated my virus defs and did a complete scan of the system (it showed clean). I downloaded the blaster removal tool from Symantec and ran it (I did remember to disable the system recovery part) and it also said I did not have the worm. I am really confused. I also checked for any listins of msblast.exe in my registry and found nothing.

Any ideas of what to try next?

you've got the new popular virus Worm/Lovsan
to close the RPC problem temporarily
start/run type services.msc find the remote procedure call and double click on it, under the recovery tab set restart program instead of restart computer(all 3 of them). This gives you time to download the antivirus programs.

But you still have the virus
download the avg antivirus free edition at grisoft.com and scan your windows\system32 DIR, the virus is msblaster.exe you can find it self too but i'd let the avg do the clearing to make sure

when you've cleared you computer from this virus, remember to restore the RPC thing to normal so it can work normally

You may not still have the virus. If your Nortons was up to date when the Worm hit your system, it would have detected it and tried to remove it. It could not stop it from getting in, but once running it could detect it and remove it. But before it could could remove it, the virus turned off your XP firewall and changed settings, so that if MSBLSTER is not running (removed) then an RPC packet coming across the Internet at your system will cause the shut down to occur.

You have now downloaded the patch to protect you and stop the RPC packets from causing a problem, the virus that infected you is long gone (Nortons did its job) and all that remains is for you to go in and Enable the XP firewall in Network Connections.
