Your router is your first and best line of defense and most have a built firewall that can be turned on. The personal firewall on your computer is a second line of defense. Security is layered. Technically you could use just the router, but for me, I like layered security.

A router firewall only monitors incoming activity. Some people like to use a third party firewall to monitor outgoing activity too.

When it comes to security (of just about anything) it is always best to have multiple layers of protection. A single layer might become compromised and exploited by a hacker but multiple layers makes this much more difficult. At some point a hacker will give up and move on to an easier target.

Here's another good reason to have a third party firewall (Re #2 above). Mine detected something trying to make changes which proved to be a trojan. This allowed me to pinpoint the exact time from prefetch files, so it was a great help in getting it sorted.

Although support has just stopped I use the "PC Tools Firewall". Not one of the cleverest but it has now proved its worth in a rather unexpected way. Fortunately the need to update firewalls is fairly low so I shall stick with it.

Lmiller7 has replied a good Ans,

Firewall can do the stat-full inspection and Router can not.
