Comment:

I was cruising in the "Device Manager" and in "Other Devices" there is one listed as "unknown device." When I click "Properies" and "Details" I get the line "root\legacy_npf\0000". I did some quick research and some say it's an unwanted application. Does anyone know what is what with this?

Infected entry. created by NtRootk trojan.

But it is also created by WinPCap (The Packet Capture and Network Monitoring Library for Windows) software that is sometime consider a legal software. If you haven't isntalled it ever, then you might delete this entry. By default NPF and LEGACY_NPF doesn't exist or not related with Microsoft Windows.

Download the "HijackThis" Installer from this link:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/e...

1. Save " HJTInstall.exe" to your desktop.
2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5.Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post Hijackthis Log in your next reply.

Log looking much better!

Your system restore points was infected, so please remove them and create new restore points.

Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Select the drive for cleaning then click OK (usually 'C' drive)
6. Click the "More Options" Tab.
7. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Restart your computer.

Hope you feeling clean now?

Enjoy clean n safe computing.

Thanks for your help. I already do most of your suggestions. But "root\legacy_npf\0000" is still there. Any ideas?

As i stated above it is also related with Winpcap software, did you ever install it on your system? if not then you can remove this registry entery. If you have Winpcap installed then you dont need to remove, you can have on your system.

For removal you can follow these steps.

Restart your computer into safe mode.
Delete this file if present:
c:\WINDOWS\system32\npf.sys

now copy following bold text and paste into notepad file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\npf]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\npf]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\npf]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NPF]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NPF]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NPF]

save this file with the name 123.reg (registry file) on your desktop. Select Save type as "All files".

now double click on 123.reg file from your desktop and click Yes.
