An odd problem just began occurring yesterday and I've tried absolutely everything I know to fix it, including nearly every solution I've read about in this forum. (See list at bottom.)
So, I use Word 2000 literally every day. Just yesterday I attempted to open the program and my PC froze--it budged a fraction and gave me an error that system resources were dangerously low, and did I want to close Word? Sure, I said. The computer didn't unfreeze nor close Word, and that's been happening consistently any time I try to open the program.
My immediate thought was some sort of spyware hidden on the computer, or perhaps a trojan snuck in. I also considered that it might have had something to do with the reinstallation of Adobe Reader 5 a day earlier. A virus was unlikely, but yet another possible source. I opened up the resource meter and even the most benign programs seem to suck me dry. Then again, maybe I just don't know enough about it -- could be.
This is the list of programs I have *already* run without finding anything:
Spybot*
Ad-Aware 6*
McAfee Online VirusScan
Norton AntiVirus*
AVG AntiVirus*
RAV AntiVirus
The Cleaner
Hijack This*Programs I use on a regular basis in addition to a ZoneAlarm firewall.
Now, RAV's online scan did find a bunch of .cab files in the C:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVES directory infected with Win32/SJG.dam#2, but I installed and ran the trial and those files didn't pop up as infected then. Hijack This's log was clean, though one of you will most likely ask me to post it anyway.
Out of frustration, I've since uninstalled both Reader and Word, though I know that's not going to solve anything. Am I going about this entirely wrong? Anyone have a clue?

And while I'm at it, I may as well mention this as it just reoccurred to me. At some point long ago I had the N-Case trojan, but removed the .exe file (I found no variations). However, while researching how to properly remove it, I read that msbb.exe overwrites the wsock32.dll file. What I'm wondering is, is it safe to remove msbb321.dll?

At least post your startup list or list of running programs so we have a clue as to what you have running. If PCHealth or Taskmonitor are still there, they can be removed along with the PCHealth entry in Task Scheduler. But those do not help that much.

All right. Here it is.

hmmm…and maybe go get SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.
Clear those items listed and see if the problems persist.

Ice

A couple of things:
The IE restrictions are most likely due to my settings in Spybot, where I specified to lock the homepage from changes. I think that's legit.
I fixed a few of the things you suggested. Those final two, no, I don't know what they are, but this is a family computer and may belong to someone else. Can you tell me what you think they are?

Oh, and Spybot only ever finds cookies, which I always remove. It has proven pretty useless this time around.
Incidentally, it also never finds the msbb321.dll file I asked about earlier, though Ad-Aware does. I still haven't removed that because I'm still not sure it's safe to remove yet.

Sorry to hear that sunshine!
Your Spybot program may have been disabled and sometimes clearing out the old references helps. And check your Ad-aware settings - it may not be configured to remove items.
Post the location of the msbb321.dll file or why don't you submit it straight to Lavasoft.
As for your problem, it may be unrelated as suggested, and could possibly be a background task conflict. >> ME forum.
Have a nice day.

All right, I'm a retard. They were able to fix my problem pronto. Word is now up and in working order.
However, since I've already broached the subject...
msbb321.dll is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, which is why I'm nervous about removing it.
I did actually uninstall and reinstall both Spybot and Ad-Aware and updated them both this afternoon in case there were any prior problems with them, so I would assume Spybot should find this file, but still hasn't. I'll submit to Lavasoft per your recommendation.
