Can't tell if a virus did this or it's just a glitch.
Try this:
attrib /d /s -r \folder\*.*
M2
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Are the files on a CD or DVD or other removeable media marked read-only? You won't be able to change the attributes if they are. Otherwise Mechanix2Go's method should work.

Yeah I'm having the same issue here. I've had XP Pro SP1 running for over a year and now noticing that I am unable to change read-only attributes. The script provided here did not work.
I tried:
attrib -r /s /d at the root of c:\ and that seemed to bring back a lot of feedback that it was not resetting a bunch of files.
Not sure if there is a patch that can fix this?? Help!
