Subject: Removing Entries from Start-up???
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: 1.4/512
Comment:

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove unused entries from the start-up tab using the System configuration utility.

I have alot of entries from old programs which have been uninstalled a long a time ago plus some suspicious entries like "[][][][]" which have been unticked and want to get rid of.

Any ideas?

Thx in advance.

You can not make them go away with MSCONFIG (as there is no easy way to reverse that operation).

If you want the un-checked entries to go away, you will have to delete them manually where they are located. Most are in Registry entires while some are in the Start Menu Programs list, while some could be in system INI files.

Or you could use a program like HijackThis and delete them. This requires that you first check them and reboot so that HijackThis finds them.

StartUp Cop is very good - will remove null entries.....

..I think it's still Free - at the top of this Link Page - not the Pro Version....

I'm pretty sure Mike Lin's

Startup Control Panel

also will remove null entries. It's free and a must have utility.

Thanks for all your suggestions folks, I did spend a while following up on each of your solutions.

I must say I was particularly impressed with Lesley's and XPUser's choice of programs to deal with this problem, so I tried them both. :-P

However the link on the PCMag.com website was not free anymore and was asking a minimum of $5.97 for this program, so I decided to opt for another site that was offering it for free :-D

Startup-Cop FREE

(Thx nonetheless Lesley, would have never guessed the name of the program).

Also XPUser, Thanx for that link to Startup Control Panel 2.8, I was more willing to use this one, but it seems as though it only picks up on the programs that are running and have already been ticked and enabled, whereas StartUp-Cop found 4 other suspicious entries that are not even labeled and look suspicious, but thanks all the same for making an effort and recommending a useful tool.

Have a nice day!

Er4,

Thx for the info and for finding the freeware version of PM StartUp Cop. I noticed its for Windows 98. Did you experienced any problem using it under XP?

TIA

Hi XPUser,

Well spotted, I noticed that too and was thinking the same, fortunately it seems to be working ok, haven't noticed any incompatibility issues yet.
