Hi,

I'm reinstalling all the software on my friend's computer after installing a new hard drive.

He has a Windows XP CD with SP1, so after reinstalling, we need to go to Windows Update and download updates, SP2, Office Updates etc.

The problem is, as soon as I connect the broadband (BT Broadband Basic), the computer is attacked by viruses. Lots of them. I can't update the antivirus, or Windows, or anything.

I tried using a firewall, but as soon as I opened the port for Windows update, the virus attacks were back, likewise the port for updating the antivirus.

I'm kind of stuck. I use dial-up myself, but downloading SP2 and all the other updates would take a week that way. Any suggestions?

Hi Roy,

If a Broadband connection is available somewhere, It would be best to get the downloadable version of SP-2 down on a CDR... It is also available on CD from Microsoft, but allow a couple weeks to get it (sorry, I don't have the link).

While you are at it, If you DL the SP-2, it would also be good to put the installables for Spybot S&D, Adaware, ZoneAlarm (or like in kind), and a decent anti-virus (KAV Trial, FPROT Trial, AVGFree, Anti-Vir, etc) on the CD too. That way the new rub can be totally protected before even accessing the internet (less incidental updates of course).

I follow this course in my business and crank out a new CD about once a week to keep defs up to date.

Perhaps if you have no broadband available a local tech shop could assemble a disk for youfor a reasonable fee...
