I really don't think so, I think your best bet is to slave the drive to another PC and run the virus tests.

what if it is in the registry I am trying to boot up with win xp in the cd drive and it come up boot from CD: and then goes to loading the OS why wont it boot the CD

If you are trying now to boot from an xp cd in the cd / dvd drive, why don't you when you go into bios set the first boot option as cd /dvd drive and set all the others to disable. Just a thought.

Avast, as XpUser4Real mentions in response #1, once installed will give you the option of a boot-time scan which will run a scan before your operating system loads.
