Try to scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

or Scan with eset online Scaner

The malicious file is:

Some webpages are auto-installing it onto people's machines, just seemed to start happening this evening. It copies an executable into the windows directory, updates the registry to auto-run it, and tries to start sending information out over the internet. It also directs Internet Explorer to redirect to port 7070 through some kind of proxy set-up.

I found some details here:

To fix the problem, kill the process NFRA.

Delete this file:

Remove these registry entries:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
ProxyServer = "http=localhost:7070"
ProxyEnable = 0x00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
ProxyServer = "http=localhost:7070"
nfra = "%Windir%\nfra.exe"

Change this registry entry from 1 to 0:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
ProxyEnable = 0x00000001

Did the malware scan with the definitions it comes with; my laptop is not allowing me to update the program though. I could not even use the eset scanner.

Malware found a trojan and removed it.
I still have the redirect problem.

And I do not have nfra.exe...

So here is my log - PLEASE HELP!

Matthew Caffrey's post is valid for NFRA.exe. On 2/24/09 a website installed NFRA.exe into the c:\windows folder and made the registry changes Matthew noted.

I wanted to point out that for me following the steps (ending the process, deleting the file, then deleting the four new registry entries and amending the modified registry entry) disabled Firefox -- I get a "Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections" error. Internet Explorer is now fully functional though!

Thanks Matthew for the informative post, I am sure I'm not the only person that caught this bug.

I noticed it when it tried to make a connection -- CA Personal Firewall caught it. I wonder what information it was trying to send out.

Someone please look at my log. I DO NOT have NFRA.exe. ALL of the scan programs that have been suggested to me to download, my computer WILL NOT allow them to do an update, and I fear that is part of this virus. I have tried FOUR program downloads, and ALL of them have the same result; they either cannot initialize, or update. HELP!

Hi Gary

Maybe it is accomplishing the redirect in the same way as NFRA. Did you check out the registry locations in Matthew's post for a port 7070 proxy?

And for anyone who stumbles on this looking for info on NFRA.exe-- the virus did two things-- it did the regedits above to redirect internet explorer, and for firefox it overrode the proxy settings under the options menu to manual proxy server 7070; I changed this back to No Proxy.

You have a dns changer, since you are not getting helped try running these scans and post their logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these sites:

Rename the setup file, mbam-setup.exe, before you download it. To do that once the "enter name of file to save to" box appears as the download begins in the filename box rename mbam-setup.exe to tool.exe> click save.

1. Double Click tool.exe to install the application.
2. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
3. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
4. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
5. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
6. Make sure that everything found is checked, and click Remove Selected.
7. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.
8. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
9. Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

If Malwarebytes installed but will not run navigate to this folder:

C:\Programs Files\Malwarebytes' AntiMalware

Rename all the .exe files in the MAlwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder and try to run it again.

Post anew Hijack This log please.

Of the 5 edits to the registry Matthew Caffrey suggested I found and deleted three. I could not find the ProxyEnable = 0x00000001 or nfra = "%Windir%\nfra.exe". I deleted the other three and IE7& and Safari work fine now.
