Hi,
I notice that there are a few occurances of the infostealer thing going round.
Been getting a Norton message saying infostealer has been found whenever I boot up. It mentions a file called jb.exe which is located in c:\windows\system32. I can delete the file from there but next time I log on it will be there again with the same thing. I've followed the directions from the Symantec website but that has done no good.
I have not posted my HJT log because of the message not to unless asked. I did however have it analyzed and it came back with Explorer not being the latest version and the file systen.exe in the registry. A quick search on google would lead me to believe that the this is due to the Bancos trojan or something.
Before deleting the entry from the registry I thought it may not be the daftest thing in the world to ask the question here about whether that is indeed the right thing to do and whether there is anything else to be done.
Kind thanks in advance.
PC

HJT by default creates backups that can be restored if necessary - provided it's run from a folder and not from a temporary directory
By all accounts, the systen.exe entry is related to a trojan, and likely should be removed - I'm not sure how (or even if) this relates to the 'infostealer' issue
If I know the answer I'll tell you the answer, and if I don't, I'll just respond, cleverly

jboy,
Thanks for your input. Got rid of the systen.exe registry entry and that was also the end of infostealer. There might be some relation after all.....
PC

So it would seem - glad to hear that's all it took, some of these pests are not so readily removed
If I know the answer I'll tell you the answer, and if I don't, I'll just respond, cleverly

I have also been fighting the infostealer virus. I followed all the instructions from Norton, and booted my laptop in Safemode, manually removing dlls from c:\windows\system32. Also removing registry keys that I could find. I'd like to post my highjackthis log and the rapport.txt log for inspection.
Thanks
Terri
