My computer became infected with W32.spybot.worm and I cannot delete it. I tried what Tom41 advised to delete it, but MSConfig32 (which is how I got it) doesn't show up in Safe Mode under Run.
At this point, I just want my computer up and running.
Does reformatting the Hard Drive back to Factory Settings guarantee the virus/worm is gone or can it still be around?
THANKS

It depends.
Many oem mfr's place the recovery data on a hidden partition. The cd has a program that accesses the partition and reinstalls. If that is the case, it is possible a virus was also copied to the hidden partition.
I am not sure how the W32.spybot.worm is installed. .

Thanks efabes, that's what I was worried about. I spoke to HP on the phone, as well as on a live support chat, and they both said it would be gone. However, I'm not too sure how much faith to put into what they said.
Is there a way I can tell about this hidden partition thing?I don't know if it matters, but I have an HP ZT1135 notebook.

Download and run Belarc advisor. If it shows a partition that windows explorer does not, then that is how their restore works. I have an old compaq laptop that placed the restore data on a hidden partition. My hp desktops at work also have this restore partition (why my company left it there is beyond me, since they have their own ghost network discs, but I digress).
It may be ok. The techs may be right. Since windows does not recognize the partition, the virus was probably not installed there. But as I said, I do not know how this virus installs itself.
Have you tried the actual symantec removal tools?
http://www.symantec.co.jp/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.dr.html
www.belarc.com

Reen, Let's see where the virus is loading from and what file name it is using. There are a couple of different versions of W32.Spybot and they all use different file names. There is no need to do a recovery install.
Download 'Hijack This!'. Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

Thanks again efabes. Is there a way I get fix this issue with the partitions? I am unable to use the internet on the infected computer. I'm working on it and I'll try Balarc when it works.
I tried Symantec's removal tools 1st. However, I am not allowed to run regedit.exe.
I tried Tom41's advice in the W32.spyboy.worm thread and went into Safe Mode w/ command prompt, but I did not have a RunOnce folder..only one that is called Run.
I've called several computer repair sites in my area and they charge $65-125/hr and guarantee virus removal. Would this be a wise option? I don't want to spend too much $$ (already paid $60+ for the Recovery CD b/c I lost mine), but if it solves the problem and gets rid of it, the cost to pay for it would be minimal compared to having it around.
Thanks again

i have no idea what this means, but here you go

I just downloaded Belarc and it gave me my profile. Where/how do I see if/where there is a partition?
Also, under logins, it shows:
NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE
NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEMThat is the warning message I got the other night when it said a remote computer tried to access my computer. Is it safe to say that's where it occurred?
I really appreciate your help (both of you). I'm desperate and clueless about these things.

Hi Reen, The file name is msconfig32.exe:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\MSCONFIG32.exe
But it is not loading from the registry run locations.
Try this, Download, unzip and run Process Explorer. Highlight the entry for Msconfig32.exe and kill the process. (click the rex X)Try deleting the file.If you are still unable to delete the file, Open HijackThis again and click 'Config' and 'Misc Tools'. Click 'Generate Startuplist log' and copy and paste it in a reply.

Symantec says this worm is easy to remove...
Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
Update the virus definitions.
Restart the computer in Safe mode.
Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as W32.Spybot.Worm.
Delete the value that was added to the registry.
Delete any zero-byte files in the startup folder. In more detail....
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.htmlI would not take my PC to a repair shop for $65-125/hr. The combined brain power on Computing.net beats 99% of problems and is free.

I went ahead and used my Recovery CDs (I don't really need any of my old files). Before installing my DSL program, I installed Zone Alarm Pro version 3, Norton Systems Works, and Norton Anti-Virus. After getting access to the internet, I updated my Anti-Virus (update is dated 8/6/03) and it shows no virus on my computer. I'm hoping it is correct.
In any case, I also downloaded Hijack This again. Here is the log. Perhaps you can advise me on whether there is still something wrong. Thank you so much!

Thanks Tom and Setter,
I trust your judgement and appreciate your help. One question really quick. I ran a PC audit on Belarc twice--once before I used my Recovery Disk and once again after.
In the first one, it shows I logged in under my old login name, and also that the hacker did 3x under NT Authority.
In my most recent on today, it shows a login under my new Windows XP user name, and the same 3 under NT Authority.
I'm guessing that NT Authority's login is an old one and not a new one. I hope I am correct. What do you think?
Thank you.
