Hi! You've read the topic, so you know what this is about ;) I use a worthless piece of crud called PC-Cillin Antivirus from Trend and I am not satisfied at all. Although it seem to have the function, I have never seen it CLEAN the files, all it does is quarantines infected files, even those infected with ancient viruses. I mean, come on! Please reccomend me a goo AV, 'cause I don't think I can stand this madness any longer!!

A question; does your system work after the files are quarantined with no difficulties? If the answer is yes, then you really should be a satisfied customer. Many times there is no file to clean, as the program caught the virus file before any of your system files could be infected. What is quarantined is the virus packet. This is really what you want to happen.

And no good anti-virus program is just going to delete infected files and programs. They could be critical programs that it can not find clean copies of, or they could be very important documents you would like to keep. It has no way of knowing. So it lets you decide what to keep.

Keep in mind too, some programs or documents can have data strings in then that look like a virus and may not be. Called a "false positive". Would you like that document you spent two months writing and is due, to be thrown away for you because of a "false positive" virus detection. Get educated.

Well Mr Jedi, may I suggest trying eTrust EZ anti virus from Computer Associates Int.
It was formerly known as InoculateIT PE.
I have yet to have anything "Quarantined" by either version, Since it seems to work on a different basis.
What that appears to be, (I have not looked into the tech details) is that the scan takes place at the incoming packet level. The usual message when something contains a virus and is handled by the program is something like this:

"InoculateIT real-time protection has found that DWARF4YOU.exe is Win32.Hybris.B worm. Not Restored."

"eTrust EZ Antivirus real-time protection has found that NETPPTP.SYS is Win32.Leave.A worm. Not Restored."

"CARD.DOC.PIF is Win32.Badtrans.29020 worm. Not restored."

"\MGMT STORY.DOC.LNK is Win32.SirCam.137216 worm. Not restored."

"INTERSTITIAL-FRAMESET[3].SCR is Win32.Klez.H worm. Not restored."

"\DWARF4YOU.exe is Win32.Hybris.B worm. Not Restored."

Those are from a few of the entries in the RT_log (RealTime Scan ). As you can see it deals with new and old nasties , of which I have had many try , but none suceed in, disrupting my system.

Also, there seems to be a distinct lack of questions on this forum reguarding problems with this fairly popular AV program.

I don't want it to Quarantine files, because sometimes it's a file or a document that I need(-ed). Like the other time I was all ready to print out a school report, when my AV detected a virus and Quarantined the file. I had to start all over again!!!

Jedi,

I would recommend AVG. I started using it about 6 months ago and I find that it is much better than any version of McAfee or Norton, AND on top of that, the progam is free off of the official website. Is found so many viruses on my PC that other virus scanner could not. Just go to...

Jedi, the goal is to rid your computer of virus infection--then keep it virus free.

If your system is being infected on a regular basis causing you to lose important data i would suggest safer surfing habits, current virus software & signature files left running 24/7.

No AV software will work 100% of the time. Data backups to removable disk should be done a regular basis.
