Quarantined, uncleanable, undeletab

Original Message

Subject: Quarantined, uncleanable, undeletab

CPU/Ram: AMD turion64 1gRAM
Model/Manufacturer: Hp Pavilion dv2020ca
Comment:
Hello, I have McAffee and it keeps flagging a virus as uncleanable and putting it into quarantine. I've tried to delete it, and the popup message just comes up again, and I'm unable to clean or delete it. The file is called iwinapp.exe.vir.Vir

It's 132 KB in size.

If it helps, I've run a hijackthis scan and I can post it if requested. The interesting thing is, when I ran analysethis (comparison of hijackthislogfile items to other users) this was one of the messages:

21 0.0% O23 IWin service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iwinapp.exe (file missing)

Can anyone help me delete the file? My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't think it's essential.

Thanks for your help

Post your Hijack this log.

Please download SmitFraudFix from this link http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Smitfra... Then extract the contents to your desktop.

!!!! Only run option #1 as runing the other options on an uninfected computer will damage the desktop.!!!!

Open the "SmitfraudFix" folder and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

If your drive is FAT you can boot in DOS and find it by:

attrib /s iwinapp*.*

Then delete it.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Jabuck, I downloaded Smitfraut, but when I try to extract it, I get the virus popup and am unable to run the program. The popup lists Process.exe as a virus and deletes it when I unzip the file. It appears to unzip anyway but the program you mentioned won't run. I will post my hijachthis log below.

Mechanix, thanks but I think I'll use your method as a last resort. I've never dabbled in DOS and I don't know if my drive is FAT. I'll have to look into it.

Here's the hijackthis:

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware We will need this later in safe mode

Be sure to update AVG Anti- Spyware

Download Killbox to your desktop from this link Killbox by Option^Explicit. If you already have "Killbox" update to this newer version. We will need it later in safe mode

Go to start> control panel> administrative tools> services> scroll down to "IWin service" and double click it> click stop> click the drop down arrow on the far right of "startup type"> click disable> apply> ok.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Run Hijack This from safe mode, close all windows except Hijack This, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

O23 - Service: IWin service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iwinapp.exe (file missing)

Exit Hijack this but remain in safe mode.

Run Killbox from safe mode. Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select:
Delete on Reboot
then Click on the All Files button.
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\iwinapp.exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let us know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually then reboot into safe mode again.

Run ATF-Cleaner from safe mode.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

In Safe Mode, run AVG Anti-spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop). Please post the AVG Antispyware report and a new Hijack This log.

Temporarily disable any of the following anti-spyware realtime protection programs that you may have Disable Realtime Protection

Then run Smitfraudfix option #1 only and post the results please.

Disable System Restore before attempting to clean any virus. After a successful removal and reboot, then re-enable System Restore.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

I followed the directions above. The virus seems to be gone from the quarantine file (yay!). I was unable to update AVG because of a server error, but I ran it anyway (and found 162 trackers! :-O ). Also, I could not find

O23-service:iwin service - unknown error - C:\windows\system32\iwinapp.exe (file missing)

in hijackthis as described in the instructions while in safe mode. Could this be because I was instructed to disable it (which I did) in administrative tools? I typed the path in killbox instead of copy/paste.

I'll run AVGas again when I've updated it. And yes, I got the pendingfilerenameoperations prompt. I was also able to run Smitfraudfix (I forgot to disable McAffee last time, but it worked this time). The AVGscan report was huge, so I won't post it right now unless you ask for it. I'll post the hijackthis and the smitfraud reports below:

Just wondering, is the computer clean now or is there still some work to be done? (You guys are awesome, thanks for the fast and detailed responses)

Your Hijack this log is clean.

Your java is out of date and should be update as soon as possible.

Download the latest version of http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the "Download" button to the right.

Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.

Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the "coffee cup" icon next to it.

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed

. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_6_0-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
