Comment: I used to use a program called "Traces Viewer" to see what items were left behind on my hard drive after a thorough cleaning. In order to clean out these items on the hard drive I used a program called Surf Safe Pilot (that was needed to be used with Traces Viewer), but had problems with the company sending me my registration number for use after I lost it (due to a complete restore of my computer). My main point is: Is there another program available that will clean items from my hard drive so that I don't have to go back to using the shareware that I did have? I payed $25.00 for the Surf Safe Pilot program and used it with success until I did a full reinstall.

Reply: Clean Disk http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/clndisk.html Comprehensive disk cleaning for the very tightest security (for Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP) - What is Clean Disk Security? - This program gives you secure file deletion, making sure that deleted files cannot be undeleted again. Deleting a file normally just removes the file's directory entry, but the data itself remains on the disk. This program completely eliminates the contents of deleted files. The highly acclaimed Gutmann disk cleaning method is now available as an option. This program can also clean the Window's swap file, and can optionally clean unneeded temporary files from your hard disk, such as your Internet browser cache, files in your system's Recycle Bin, and can clear the "recent files" list. Comes with a direct disk viewer for discovering exactly what is on your hard disk. - Don't sell your hard drive before cleaning it with Clean Disk Security ™! -

Reply: michael2, Is Clean Disk Security a free program? Just wondering, because there are two items listed at this site and at the bottom of the page it gives a price of $25.00 below the other item.

Reply: The programs already mentioned are good. There is another freeware dick cleaner program that I am using. I haven't had it long, but it seems to do a good job.**I haven't verified the index.dat cleaning performance yet! It's called CM Disk Cleaner. It's not a small program though. Check it out at http://www.cmdiskcleaner.com/ Regards, JB
