Good morning all, This is just a preventative question, should the need arise for me to take action. If somebody finds a suspicious looking e-mail, or attatchment, what is the best way to quickly getting rid of it in a hurry? I naturally know not to open it, of course, but want to know how best to totally get rid of it. Is simply hitting the "delete" sufficient? Many thanks, Tom

In the Inbox - without opening - right click and Delete and then Delete from Deleted items in the same way

However - before Deleting - if you're curious - right click and do Details and then Message Source - 'stretch' it out and then you can read the Message without opening it

Be careful though if it has an Attachment and you think it's a 'nasty'!

be careful if you have 'preview pane' on...as I'm sure this still lets the virus in as the email still gets opened when you right-click (it's exactly how my home pc got infected)

Thanks Leslie and Unnameable; tried it - it works. I couldn't find the (above mentioned) "preview pane"; do you mean the subject line?

The Preview Pane is enabled in View\Layout - but - DON'T enable it - if you do then Messages open straight into it without you clicking on them - not a good idea!

the preview pane is on MS Outlook (and Outlook Express).
it sits below your inbox so that when you highlight an email it appears in the preview pane (no need to double click to open emails).
Trouble is it leaves no easy way of leaving emails unopened, and stops you deleting them without opening!

O.K., I think I understand..... I just checked and "show preview pane" IS checked; and "show preview pane header" IS also checked. Do you advise that I un-check them both?

Yes - uncheck them both - then - the messages will just be in a List in the Inbox - to open Messages in the Inbox just doubleclick them

Right click in the little narrow strip - where - it says Sent(or Received) - and then you can have the List Ascending or Descending

Thanks so much Leslie; I wasn't too sure about those particular settings. My nephew set those up for me the day I got my 'puter; but now with all of the worms and such being embedded in e-mail, I glad I asked for advice. Have a great day! Tom

tommyo you have no idea.

you can get infected by:

- file sharing P2P and CD/Floppys
- instant messaging
- email attachments
- malitious web scripts (surfing)
- just being connected to the web (MSBlaster.exe)
- social engineering
- 3rd party software that is packaged along with innocent software by sneaky b*st*rds

basically just about everything. you should have
a firewall
an antivirus scanner (keep it updated)
a heuristic scanner (SpyBot)
an adware scanner (AdAware)

and a big freakin comdom to fit over your computer.

Thanks RayMan, I've got Zone Alarm, McAfee, and Spybot, but I don't have any condom; but I'll tell you, the way some people send malicious worms and such around, just might need one pretty soon! Thanks for the advice! Tommyo
