Hi I have a few problems that occur with my interface and sound. Firstly the them of my desktop keeps on reverting back from the generic XP look, to an older version without me doing anything.

Secondly my cursor will flash between the normal pointer and the hourglass every few seconds as if its loading something.

Thirdly I cannot play music on wmplayer as it says my sound device isnt working properly although it works fine when I turn the pc on and when I shutdown.

Fourth problem is I have an unusual amount of svchost.exe's running at the same time and some are taking more memory usage than explorer.exe which I was told indicates malware.
All these problems seemed to have occured at the same time Is there anything I can do?

phew... all those problems on one computer !
Let's get to the point:
Maybe you've already tried some but I recommend you should use good anti-spy/mal/adware programs like
- Ad-Aware
- Spybot S&D
- Ewido Anti-Malware (has a new name but i forgot -.-)
- Prevx (www.prevx.com -> free version)

Search your computer for Adware/Spyware/Malware/Virusses/Trojans etc. with these programs and eliminate all the threats that you can find.

If you are still having problems after this, go ask help from experts, with a HJT-log (HijackThis-log) that you must make and post for personal help. (DO NOT POST IT ON THIS SITE, unless an expert requested it)

Hope i helped you
Greetz.

Let's start with the basics
1- To find out what CPU/Ram you have installed just right click on My Computer and click on properties, the info will be there.

Now, have you tried a system restore yet?

2- sp1 or sp2?
3- what version of WMP do you use? Have you tried other players? If so, which ones?
4- Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing WMP?
5- Have you updated your sound card and vid drivers with the latest versions?

It would be nice to have more info

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

If a system restore didn't help, why not try a repair install? http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/X...

Now if that doesn't work, do like teron said, you may try to send an IM to jabuck and ask him for help. He is the main person that knows how to use HJT. Good Luck

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Why is it that absolutely no one ever asks what the user is running for AV software?

If the answer is "None", tell them to get one and repost.

Almost all of these "virus?" problems will vanish!

Anyone NOT useing AntiVirus software is an idiot, especially in this day and age!

Thank You Sir.

If your AV is up to date, and you don't have virus alerts going off, rest assured you are NOT infected.

Additionally, I should apologize to you personally, in that the question was not directed AT you. Rather it was dirceted at the advisors that populate this site.

Numerous instances of "svchost" are common and rarely denote a problem. I personally find 4 of them on my nearly spotless system.

It would first occur to me that you appear to have a hardware conflict.

No offense, but I highly disagree with that. There is no one anti-virus that will detect everything.

If you think you have a virus or trojan, you can do some online anti-virus scans at these sites:

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

http://www.bitdefender.com/ See the "scan now" button on the lower left side.

http://www.pandasoftware.com/produc...

http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

The new name for Ewido is AVG Anti-Spyware. It's free and well recommended.

If ANY AV program lets some slip by, why would anyone use it?

Some items will get by antivirus programs, but they are not viruses!
