hello yes you can format to remove worms viruses and trojins. but if doing format for them do fdisk /mbr and maby do low level format allso. but you should first try to remove the virues with specail tools from most anti virus makers sights.

If I understand your question correctly.. .exe .scr and probably loads more. I received an E-mail attachment with a double extention ie music.mp3.scr Was it a mp3 file or a screen saver file ??? It was neither, it was a virus. If I did not have the PC set up to show all known extentions I may have only seen .mp3 and not have been suspicious. To see all known extentions.....
Go to START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - FOLDER OPTIONS - VIEW - then uncheck the option for HIDE FILE EXTENTIONS OF KNOWN FILE TYPES - APPLY - OK.

.vbs is one that comes to mind...and always look out for files with double-extensions,as mentioned above.
Definitely follow michael2's last tip!

Any file can contain a virus. There are programs out there that rename a virus file to appear as a jpg or a bmp or anything the sender wants to rename it.
Just watch out for any e-mail attachments you're not expecting...
