Specs: Windows XP, Athlon 64 X2/4GB
I have a issue with my ntuser.dat file. I believe I may have downloaded something that made changes to it. My Windows Onecare was disabled and I was unable to use task manager. How can I check the ntuser.dat file ? Regedit and loading the hive failed, message file in use.

Does Windows start at all?
Can you run Safe Mode? (pressing F8 key before Windows loads)
Have you tried System Restore?

What Operating System and Service Pack are you using?

Yes, I am able to boot windows normaly and safe mode. System restore would not over write the ntuser.dat file. I created another admin account and tried to do it that way , but that also failed stating the file is in use.

Please create a new user with Administrator privilidges
The ntuser.dat file should then be ok (for that new account)
You can then copy all your data from your old account to the new one

Anyway that's an easy fix, and you can also remove that account later on if you don't want it.
